On February 17, the 3rd Monday of the month, join us at the Villa Montezuma at 7 PM for Songs of the Phantom!

One evening each month, Cinballera hosts its own monthly opera night, Cinballera Salon: Opera at the Villa! We're collaborating with the historic Villa Montezuma Museum at 1925 K Street, San Diego in the historic Sherman Heights Historic District. February will be our first Salon of 2025 at the Villa Montezuma and the first anniversary of Cinballera Salon: Opera at the Villa!

This month's theme is Songs of the Phantom. In honor of our first anniversary at the Villa Montezuma, we're offering something special for the month of love. The first half of the program will be an original chamber opera we performed last April, Phantom of the Paris Opera. It's the story you know and love, whether from Gaston Leroux's Gothic French novel, Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit Broadway musical, one of the countless film adaptations, or all of the above! We're telling the story in the form of an opera, with art songs backstage, opera excerpts onstage, and plenty of drama in between with innocent soprano Christine, tyrannical diva Carlotta, fickle tenor Raoul, and the mysterious Erique, who becomes the Phantom.

The second half of the program will be assorted songs related to the Phantom. There will be excerpts from the beloved stage and screen adaptations of the story and other classical selections in the same theme.

We call this series Cinballera Salon because it is a loving tribute to the musical salons of years past, when friends would gather in lovely parlor to enjoy sharing music for an evening. Hosted the third week of the month, each evening will have a different theme. Music on the program will include opera arias, art songs, and other classical vocal music, performed by talented operatic singers from throughout the region. There is a special emphasis on duets, trios, and other ensembles, to recreate opera scenes in an intimate setting.

In keeping with this mansion's gracious history, we encourage our guests to use this as an excuse to dress up for an evening out! Gentlemen, dust off your favorite suit and tie, and ladies, here's a chance to wear that dress and hat you've been saving! In keeping with the theme, the February Salon will be a masquerade. Wear your most glamorous, mysterious, or playful mask!

No tickets; admittance with a donation (suggested amount $25 per person). All the proceeds support the two non-profit organizations, Cinballera and Friends of the Villa Montezuma, and pay the performers.
