The Los Angeles Master Chorale, led by Grant Gershon, Kiki & David Gindler Artistic Director, today announced its 2021-22 season and long-awaited return to Walt Disney Concert Hall, following the venue’s closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The California Department of Public Health issued a mandate that all public gatherings, including concerts and presentations at Walt Disney Concert Hall, should be canceled through March 31, 2020 to protect public health and slow the rate of transmission of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
Preeminent gospel artist Yolanda Adams, The New York Times' critic-at-large Wesley Morris, and singer Valerie June are confirmed as part of the LA Phil's Power to the People! festival. Morris, one of the most compelling cultural critics of our time, will speak at the California African American Museum, Tuesday, March 10, at 7pm. Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist June will perform along with Terence Blanchard and Ben Harper in an evening dedicated to the exploration of Spike Lee's movie music at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Saturday, March 14, at 8pm.
The celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Los Angeles Master Chorale's Annual High School Choir Festival will be so joyous, it cannot be contained within the walls of Walt Disney Concert Hall! As part of the celebratory Festival Day on Friday, May 3, over 1,000 student singers will give a pop-up performance outdoors on the main staircase of Disney Hall on Grand Avenue at 11:30 AM. Internationally renowned choral conductor and composer Eric Whitacre, who is the 2019 Festival's guest artist, will lead the students in a performance of Pentatonix's Sing, arranged for the Master Chorale by Ben Bram and Pentatonix.
In its Centennial year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic continues to grow in its commitment to supporting the creation of new music and nurturing young composers through two programs: National Composers Intensive (NCI), for composers ages 18 to 30, and the Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program (CFP) for high school-aged composers. For the first time, the NCI program collaborates with New York City-based International Contemporary Ensemble (the Ensemble) to work with seven composers who will have the opportunity to workshop their pieces, both in New York and in Los Angeles, culminating in a performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Mark Murphy has announced his decision to leave REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater), the California Institute of the Arts' contemporary performing arts and exhibition space located in The Walt Disney Concert Hall, at the end of the 2018/2019 season, in order to focus his attention on initiating new creative programs and productions in a variety of US and international cities. Murphy has led REDCAT for more than seventeen years, starting as its founding Executive Director in 2001, before overseeing the grand opening of the facility in 2003. Edgar Miramontes, Associate Director at REDCAT, will assume additional duties of interim leadership until a permanent appointment is made.
