WCCs Hawaii Conservatory of Performing Arts presents the world premiere of Lee Catalunas "Kimo the Waiter" directed by Taurie Kinoshita, at Palik Theatre February 23–March 3.
Cataluna addresses issues of accessibility, diversity, and inclusion in the world of TV and film. Kimo loves acting, and he’s good at it. He dedicates himself to his craft, auditions relentlessly — he’ll do whatever it takes. But he’s always too brown, or not brown enough, or just…not enough. How many times can one play “the waiter?” Set in 1980s Honolulu, "Kimo the Waiter" follows a man in love with a dream of a world where everything is within reach. “A hilarious and moving look into the world of an actor. Cataluna shows the frustrations and raucous truths of what actors experience,” said Kinoshita.
The cast includes Alakai Cunningham as Kimo (seen in Oriental Faddah and Son at Palik Theatre), Stuart Featheran (featured in The Wind and the Reckoning film), and Kirstyn Trombetta (most recently seen in Haoleland at Kumu Kahua Theatre). The play is considered family-friendly and runs approximately 90 minutes.
