A Haitian immigrant travels from Miami to California on a once-in-a-lifetime road trip. Years later, his son makes the same journey in reverse. Along the way, blurring the lines of time, these two finally discover common ground and make a connection that has eluded them for decades.

BREAKDOWN

All roles will be understudied.

SEEKING:

JEAN – mid-50s-mid-60s. JONAH’s father. A Haitian immigrant living in Miami. A teacher in Haiti, he finds work as a baggage handler in the States, though he remains a teacher in his heart. A sensitive soul with a reserved demeanor. He has a great capacity for love but has found himself unable communicate that love to his son. There is a yearning in him – for home, for connection, for spiritual freedom – that is temporarily assuaged by a new lover, driving his old car, Bluegrass music – but never extinguished. This character sings, but does not need to and shouldn’t sound professionally trained.

JONAH – 30s. JEAN’s son. Haitian-American, gay, a linguist. Living in the Bay Area, in love with a married man. There’s a hole in his life where his family should be, but he’s too busy in his day-to-day to look too closely at it. He has learned not to expect too much from the men in his life – his father included – and has developed a deflective humor and clinical remove. As he travels across America to claim his father’s remains, he begins to understand and sympathize with his father’s loneliness and longing, and to allow himself to want more. This character sings, but does not need to and shouldn’t sound professionally trained.

CHORUS – Male-identifying and Female-identifying. Musicians and singers. The chorus plays and sings live music onstage, and steps into the action in a variety of different roles, including KARL (Jonah’s married boyfriend), ERWIN (a white Kansan from Grindr), and ADEDAYO (the unexpected lover he meets on the road).
