BREAKDOWN

SPARKFEST 2026

AMAA. EGG. OYÁ.

Written by: Lori Felipe-Barkin
Directed by: Laurie Woolery
Total Schedule: June 5-13

SYNOPSIS: This is the story of Ama, a Cuban-American woman from Hialeah hell-bent on having a child despite many miscarriages and bad luck. It's no wonder she feels an affinity towards Oyá, a barren African Orisha. Blending Yoruba fables, Miami flavor, and Afro-Cuban beats, this bilingual play examines motherhood, maternal ambivalence, infertility, and class.

SETTING: Hialeah, Florida
This play is inspired by and honors Afro-Cuban tradition.

SEEKING:

Ama - 30s, Female, Cuban-American, dressed in purple; passionate, determined, won't take no for an answer; inspired by Oyá.
Yanislet / Mary - 50s-60s, Female, Cuban, dressed in blue; maternal and a chronic multi-tasker that can move between elation and irritation at break-neck speed. Inspired by Yemayá.
Oli / Doctor - Late teens-20s, Female, Cuban-American, dressed in yellow; youthful, effervescent, playful; she's that girl! Inspired by Ochún.
Babalao / Go / Baby / Hunter - Any age, Male, Latino, dressed in red; a hustler, a flirt, but also sincere; he's got his mind on his money and money on his mind. Inspired by Changó.
Stage Directions - any age, any identity.

LOS FELIZ, OR THE LIVE-IN NANNY PLAY

Written by: Benjamin Benne
Directed by: Cat Rodríguez
Total Schedule: June 8-14

SYNOPSIS: Irene, an affluent Latina, hires Emilia, a Latina immigrant, to be her live-in nanny in Los Feliz, Los Angeles.

SETTING: Now-ish a 2-ish-million-dollar house in Los Feliz/Los Angeles County

SEEKING:

Irene - 2nd gen Latina living in Los Angeles, age 39, an OB-GYN, & a mother to Kenji (she always, always means well)
Emilia - immigrant Latina from Central America, age 29, the live-in nanny, & a mother to Pati (she’s always bright-eyed and earnest). Fluent in English and Spanish.
Stage Directions - any age, any identity.

ESCOBAR'S HIPPO

Written by: Franky D. Gonzalez
Directed by: Rebecca Aparicio
Total Schedule: June 8-14

SYNOPSIS: A Colombian town along the Magdalena River plunges into chaos after a flatulent, destructive, easily offended, and adventurous hippo comes to town and wreaks havoc. The crisis worsens when people begin transforming into hippos themselves, causing, not only chaos but the beginnings of a revolution where humans are trampled by these new Hipposapiens. An homage to the works of Ionesco (namely Rhinoceros and The Killer), this play explores through absurdity and comedy the very serious and deadly consequences that come with the surrendering of humanity in favor of bestial urges and self-gratification.

SETTING: A town along the Magdalena River in Colombia
Latin America encompasses many ethnicities and backgrounds and should reflect the richness of the global majority.

SEEKING:

Bernardo - Unkempt, messy, old clothes, fashionably poor with a Bohemian flair. Self-pitying. He feels the world owes him for his genius. Mid 20s-early 30s. Male. Latin American.
Dalia - Waitress at the café Bernardo frequents. Sensibly dressed. Good spirits, and a desire to be part of something important. Mid 20s-early 30s. Female. Latin American.
Juan - Bernardo’s best friend. Smartly, but casually dressed. Well put-together, no-nonsense, does not like to waste time. Mid 20s-early 30s. Male. Latin American.
Escobar’s Hippo - A hippopotamus of either sub-Saharan or Colombian descent. Can’t say for sure. Is descended from Pablo Escobar’s private collection of hippos and may even be one of Pablo Escobar’s original hippos. Again, can’t say for sure. But it’s definitely a hippopotamus and probably immortal. Latin American.
Town Mayor - Self-important, bureaucratic, but not smart enough to actually be a bureaucrat. Overcomplicates the simplest of matters and jams up the power of government to do something useful. You know, like in real life. Latin American.
Chorus of Townspeople - A group of five people always suggesting, always questioning, and never really doing anything except complaining. As such, they are the most powerful and influential voting bloc in the town, and therefore the most important people at town halls and gatherings. Members of the global majority.
The Hipposapien - Part human, part hippo, all belligerence. Should have the head of a hippo and begins bipedal but ends on all fours. Latin American.
The Narrator - A commentator on the inner lives of the characters. Think David Attenborough if he was watching the end of humanity with fascination and a little excitement.
