ABOUT THE PRODUCTION: An inspiring tale filled with laughter and adventure, The Three Musketeers is a reminder to all that courage, honesty, and valor can change the world. Kirsten Childs’s adaptation finds its inspiration in the oft-ignored fact that writer Alexandre Dumas was of French-Haitian heritage, and award-winning director Kent Gash (The Comedy of Errors) playfully mixes swagger and swashbuckling adventure with a cast from the GLOBAL AFRICAN DIASPORA including but not limited to: African American, Afro British, Caribbean, Afro Latine, Afro Asian, and MENA.
SEEKING:
Alexandre Dumas/Cardinal Richelieu/As Cast: 30s, He/Him, Black/Global African Diaspora. A dynamic, mercurial, charismatic, impulsive, floridly articulate, theatrical, and larger-than-life personality that can dominate the proceedings with energy, style, and panache! At home in verse, heightened language, spoken word, and hip-hop. He is not only writing the story, but he is feeling it and embodying all of it as it unfolds. He is a shape-shifting chameleon of ENDLESS INVENTION. His brain and impulses are faster than the speed of thought. Has all the qualities we associate with a STAR! A POP CULTURE ICON OF HIS TIME! He knows it and revels in his celebrity. A young Denzel, Idris, Sidney, the animal magnetism of Prince, with the talent of Geoffrey Wright and Adrian Lester. Moves very well and is comfortable fencing. Also CARDINAL RICHELIEU. A seemingly loyal officer of the Church who is, manipulative, self-serving, and power hungry. He is elegantly deceitful, attractive, charming, and a cold-blooded evil wrongdoer. A diabolical puppet master with a GREAT POKER FACE.
Milady/As Cast: 20s-30s, She/Her, Black/Global African Diaspora. The iconic, OG Glamazonian Badass. Statuesque, beautiful, Self-knowing and self-possessed, witty, attractive, and compelling, she is the original velvet hammer: smooth, lethal, a force of nature. Mary J Blige, Michelle Obama, Miranda Priestly, and Pam Grier… And even more brilliant than she is beautiful. Strategic, cunning, witty, inventive, and smarter than any male-identifying character in the story.
D’Artagnan/As Cast: Early 20s, He/Him, Black/Global African Diaspora. An athletic, attractive, charming, sincere diamond-in-the-rough, romantic lead. He possesses natural grace, agility, and physical dexterity in the “young romantic lead” tradition. He can be awkward socially and romantically and is ignorant of a great deal, but his heart is true. The opposite of the stylish, sophisticated, worldly, and urbane Musketeers. The definition of the romantic, heroic SWASHBUCKLER with Obi-Won-Kenobi or Yoda-like saber/fencing skill. Plays the full arc from young vulnerable and unsophisticated to an intersection of Marvin Gaye, Drake, and Lancelot. SINGS (Soul and R&B) well.
Athos/As Cast: Late 20s, He/Him, Black/Global African Diaspora. The oldest of the titular Three Musketeers. He is the most aristocratic and wise of the Three and becomes a mentor and surrogate Father figure to D'Artagnan. It is not entirely surprising that we discover he is a Count. He was once married to Milady… so even though he is the oldest he can still “pull em.” Attractive and immensely likable, he is rock solid, anchoring and grounding the others. He can put everyone at ease. Sometimes melancholic, the breadth and depth of his service as a Musketeer has made him deliberate and at times melancholic. An old soul. Who has seen a lot.
Aramis/As Cast: Early 20s, He/Him, Black/Global African Diaspora. The most spiritual of the Three Musketeers, he was brought up in a monastery. A contradiction, as he is very much the ladies’ man! He is soon to join the priesthood. He is an expert swordsman who defends the honor of a beloved lady and kills the offender. His passion runs deep. He can be quick to act as he feels everything deeply. He leads with his heart, a sense of faith, and a lethal facility with a sword! He would kill for HONOR and does.
Porthos/As Cast: Early 20s, He/Him, Black/Global African Diaspora. Worldly, sophisticated, and classically handsome with an attractive physique that they are quite proud of. They are the epitome of STYLE and PANACHE, a “traditionally” masculine peacock who captures the imaginations of every gender everywhere. Always on the cutting edge of style, he appreciates the beautiful things in life and is a sensualist of the highest order. Strong and agile, deadly, powerful, and always the STYLISH BON VIVANT! The life of every party and center of attention in every room!
Constance/As Cast: 18+ to play late teens. She/Her or Non-Binary, Black/Global African Diaspora. A warm, honest, and pure presence with a great and true heart. She is fiercely loyal to the Queen and is desired by D'Artagnan, among many others. She has moxie and innate strength, if tested. Her beauty belies a razor-sharp intelligence and a survival sense that’s hard-won.
Rochefort/As Cast: 20s-30s, He/Him, Black/Global African Diaspora. The Man from Meung. In the novel, he is a thief who steals important letters from D'Artagnan, making him an enemy to the young hero. He is described as “fair with a scar across his cheek,” so in a world where appearance is an essential value, his imperfection makes him stand out. A cunning, facile, and nimble foil or opposite of D’artagnan. He could be seen as an anti-hero by some as he pops up throughout the original material, and eventually he and D’artagnan duel on three separate occasions. They become friends late in life. An arch-nemesis. Genuinely sinister and frightening in the Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Morgan Freeman in Street Smart, Sam Jackson in Hateful Eight. Elegant and LETHAL.
Duke of Buckingham/As Cast: 20s-30s, He/Him, Black/Global African Diaspora. The SECOND most powerful man in England, so while he enjoys title and position, he must also compromise and acquiesce. He is reputedly the HANDSOMEST MAN IN EUROPE. PRETERNATURALLY ATTRACTIVE to seemingly EVERYONE. Charming, charismatic. A man of stature. Nothing is more important to him than his love of Anne and that’s “complicated.” In any other story, he would be the heroic romantic leading man just by virtue of his being so classically handsome. This role requires a strong British Dialect. From the Queens/Mayfair sound ala Tim Curry as FrankNFurter to the pointed sharpness of Rex Harrison, a true Brit. Likely doubles LORETTO VITTORI and SINGS VERY WELL in the style of androgynous club pop ala Bowie/Ziggy Stardust/ Grace Jones and Billy Porter.
Anne/As Cast: 20s-30s, She/Her, Black/Global African Diaspora. A Spanish noble, she is seen as an outsider by the French. Though she is married to King Louis, she is in love with the Duke of Buckingham. An immediate force of nature, who is very connected to her impulses and instincts. She knows she is being watched and is a foreigner, of Spanish descent married to a French King. She is a “complicated” woman who can keep a secret and hold multiple truths. Actors who speak Spanish are encouraged to submit.
Louis/As Cast: 20s, Non-Binary or Trans, Black/Global African Diaspora. The young King of France. They are not interested in a great deal of the day-to-day nuisances of running a country and being Royalty, but they are not the fool that many perceive them to be. A master delegator. They misjudge Richelieu to near-disastrous consequences. They can be impulsive and capricious, as many young people are. Never afraid to be straight up “gangsta” one minute and inventing a new omelet recipe the next. Has a sly sense of humor and unpredictability.
Lady Lannoy/As Cast: Late 30s, She/Her, Black/Global African Diaspora. The “Mata Hari” of the tale. She is a woman who can gain the trust of many and then betray them and bring them to ruin. She is an opportunist and always looking for an angle. Always on the old school hustle that’s too classy for its own good. Can be vicious and condescending if crossed. Her consummate wiles allow her to insinuate her way into the confidence of anyone. Endlessly adaptable, her manipulative talents are for sale to the highest bidder. She is fascinating, even standing still. Can be supremely imperious. Has excellent comic timing verbally and physically.
