1992. Janice lives with her family in an Ohio suburb—a world away from her childhood in 1960s Kansas, where her activist parents fought to integrate public pools and taught Black children how to swim. When she is asked to return and speak at a ceremony honoring her father, she must decide whether she is ready to reckon with her political inheritance and a past she has tried to forget. the ripple, the wave that carried me home is a poignant, transporting, and quietly subversive story of justice, legacy, and forgiveness.

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Please prepare a 2-3 minute contemporary or classical monologue, your choice; preference for heightened or poetic language, or works from plays in a Yale Rep season. Please include a slate that includes your full name and the project and/or role for which you're interested to audition.

SEEKING

:

[JANICE] mid-30s. Black American woman. Intentional, observant, a charismatic storyteller like her father and a pragmatist like her mother. The only child of activist parents, Edwin and Helen, Janice came of age in Beacon, Kansas during the 70’s giving speeches as a kid and attending rallies with her parents as they worked to integrate and bring equitable swimming conditions to Beacon. She has put distance between her and her family, preferring her quiet life in Ohio with her husband and two young sons. An invitation to participate in the naming ceremony of a community pool in honor of her deceased father compels her to examine the impact of her parent’s activism on her life growing up and her rejection of its legacy. Janice often delivers story directly to the audience and is comfortable with direct address, meaning, ready for a different scene partner (the audience) every night. A strong sense of play, spontaneity and access to humor are important.

[HELEN] 30s/40s. Black American woman. Janice’s mother. Edwin’s wife. Compassionate, purposeful, she operates with quiet determination and foresight. She was born and raised in Beacon, Kansas in a well-respected middle-class family, and feels a strong responsibility to her community. She is the backroom activist while her husband is the face of the work, strategizing behind the scenes to integrate and bring equitable swimming conditions to Beacon. She is passionate about the water and has swum her whole life. It is her freedom, joy and her politics. Even more than the water, she loves her husband, often making sacrifices to protect his well-being and preserve their dreams.

[GAYLE/YOUNG CHIPPER AMBITIOUS BLACK WOMAN] [GAYLE] 30/40s. Black American woman. Helen’s younger sister, Janice’s aunt. Fun loving, audacious, earthy. In her younger days, Gayle participated in archeological digs in distant lands and ran a farm with her husband. She returns to Beacon in her 50’s to live with her also widowed sister Helen. She loves the land. She smells like the earth. She is a cardinal point for Janice when she feels lost. Doubles as [YOUNG CHIPPER AMBITIOUS BLACK WOMAN] late 20s– Black American woman. Chair of the African American Recognition Committee in Beacon, Kansas. She’s organizing the naming ceremony and wants Janice’s participation. Persistent, driven, well meaning, earnest.

[EDWIN] 30s/40s. Black American man. Janice's father and Helen's husband. Edwin was born and raised in Beacon, to lesser means than his wife Helen. He is a natural storyteller and a disrupter. Charismatic, passionate, stubborn, and determined, his impulsiveness sometimes obscures the consequences of his actions. He loves his wife deeply. He is dedicated to the cause, with a determination boarding on obsessiveness to integrate and bring equitable swimming conditions to Beacon. A caring father, he is somehow unable to mend the rift that occurs between him and Janice the summer before she goes to college.
