MERCHANT OF VENICE/MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM/ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD
The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead will run in rotating-repertory. Each actor will be in all three (or in some cases two) plays. Tracks and roles are subject to change. All roles are understudied. Actors will perform up to 6 times per week (no matinees). All actors must have extensive experience with performing Shakespeare.
PORTIA (Merchant)/ HELENA (Midsummer)
Any ethnicity. Female. Late 20s- early 30s. Ideally at least 5’5”.
PORTIA: A wealthy heiress. Equal parts beautiful and clever.
HELENA: Part of the quartet of lovers. Lovesick and insecure. Doesn’t believe that she can truly be loved. Funny.
TBD (Merchant)/ TITANIA/HIPPOLYTA (Midsummer)/ GERTRUDE (R & G)
Any ethnicity. Female. 30s-early 40s.
TITANIA: Queen of the fairies. Must be able to be strong and combative one moment and soft and smitten the next.
GERTRUDE: Weak-willed and dependent. Desperate for status and affection. Has a real instinct for self-preservation.
GRATIANO (Merchant)/TBD MECHANICAL (Midsummer)/ PLAYER (R & G)
Any ethnicity. Male. 40s-50s.
GRATIANO: A good friend of Bassanio. Speaks his mind whether it is called for or not. Garrulous and rude. Marries Nerissa.
TBD MECHANICAL: A manual laborer and amateur actor. Comic and well-meaning.
PLAYER: A ringmaster. Mysterious, confident and knowing but also base. He plays up his seeming control and omniscience, but underneath it all, he will do anything for a buck.
DUKE OF VENICE and/or PRINCE OF MOROCCO (Merchant)/TBD MECHANICAL (Midsummer)/CLAUDIUS (R & G)
Any ethnicity, but if doubled with Prince of Morocco, African American preferable. Male. 40s-50s.
DUKE OF VENICE: An arbiter of justice. Prides himself on having respect for the law.
PRINCE OF MOROCCO: Suitor to Portia
TBD MECHANICAL: A manual laborer and amateur actor. Comic and well-meaning.
CLAUDIUS: Calculating, ambitious and conniving, but also possesses a modicum of human emotion.
PRINCE OF MOROCCO or SALERIO (Merchant)/ PUCK (Midsummer)/ HAMLET (R & G)
Any ethnicity, but if doubled with Prince of Morocco, African American preferable. Male. 20s- early 30s
PRINCE OF MOROCCO: Suitor to Portia
SALERIO: Friend of Antonio. A Venetian gentleman and counterpart of Solanio.
PUCK: A mischievous fairy. Does Oberon’s bidding, but with his own spin. Causes chaos and enjoys pulling the strings.
HAMLET: Melancholy and cynical. Paralyzed by indecision. Prone to outbursts of rage. Ultimately self-preserving, his action causes the deaths of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
LAUNCELOT GOBBO (Merchant)/ TBD MECHANICAL (Midsummer)/ ROSENCRANTZ (R & G)
Any ethnicity. Male. 30s-early 40s
LAUNCELOT GOBBO: A clown and servant to Shylock. A clever comic.
TBD MECHANICAL: A manual laborer and amateur actor. Comic and well-meaning.
ROSENCRANTZ: An everyman. The more pragmatic and laid back of the pair. Confused by much of what goes on around him, and Guildenstern’s strong reactions to it. A quietly keen observer and sensitive man. Tries to keep a positive outlook.
BASSANIO (Merchant)/DEMETRIUS (Midsummer)/ HORATIO (R & G)
Any ethnicity. Male. Late 20s- early 30s
BASSANIO: A suitor of Portia. Caught between his carefree, spendthrift youth and a desire to be a mature adult. Not the sharpest business man, lets his heart drive his actions.
DEMETRIUS: Part of the quartet of lovers. Starts with a steadfast love for Hermia, but (with a little help) comes to love Helena. May be good on paper, but not the nicest guy.
HORATIO: Hamlet’s close friend. Loyal.
