BREAKDOWN

Seeking:

Richard: Non-white, Male, 20-35. Duke of Gloucester, afterwards King Richard the Third; also casting understudy.

Young Richard: Non-white, Male, 18+ to play 10-15 years old. Richard as a boy. Kind, gentle, and earnest. Fears the terrors of the world and his older brothers. Doubles with Ensemble roles.

Buckingham: Male, 20-35. Richard’s right-hand man. As amoral, ambitious, and violent as Richard is at the beginning of the play. Eventually confronts his role in the atrocities he helped commit.

Queen Elizabeth: Female, 30-35. Wife of King Edward IV. Becomes one of Richard’s main adversaries.

Duchess of York: Non-white, Female, 50+. Mother of Richard, George, and Edward. A powerful voice of dissent against Richard.

Margaret: Female, 45+. Widow of King Henry VI. One of the most vehement voices against Richard. Forced to live off of an allowance from her husband’s killers. Mourns her murdered husband and children and curses their murderers.

King Edward IV/King Henry VII: Non-white, Male, 30-35. Richard’s oldest brother and King at the start of the play. Becomes frail and easily manipulated in his illness. Doubles with: King Henry VII (Earlier, Earl of Richmond): a capable leader who becomes King by killing Richard at Bosworth Field.

Lady Anne: Female, 20-30. Widow of King Henry VI’s heir, Edward, Prince of Wales. Later marries Richard.

Lord Hastings: Male, 25-35. Faithful friend of King Edward IV. Opposes Richard. Entitlement is his fatal flaw.

Lord Stanley: Male, 30-40. A double-dealing career politician. Helps Richard rise to power, then aids in his assassination.

Ratcliffe & Catesby: Male, 25-40. Richard’s henchmen, loyal to the extreme. Crafty, overeducated, and lacks subtlety.

George/others: Non-white, Male, 30-35. Duke of Clarence: middle brother of Richard and Edward. Loving to a fault. Will double with Ensemble roles.

Ensemble: 18-50. Murderers, Citizens, Ely Dorset, Grey, Mayor and others; featured characters which will double with other roles; Movement & fight skills a plus; will understudy principal roles.
