Long envisioned as a major international cultural institution in the heart of a revived Lower Manhattan,
the Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) is the final element and cultural keystone of the
2003 Master Plan developed during Mike Bloomberg’s tenure as mayor for rebuilding the World Trade
Center site after the tragedy on 9/11. PAC NYC will help to redefine Lower Manhattan as a cultural
destination and serve as a testament to the power of the arts to inspire and unite us. Currently under
construction, we will open to the public in September of this year.
A fabulously radical reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic dance musical based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, inspired by the pageant competitions of New York City’s Ballroom culture. With all new ballroom and club beats, and an edgy eleganza makeover, this Jellicle Ball trades feline for fierce, celebrating the joyous transformation of self at the heart of Cats and Ballroom culture itself.
By arrangement with The Really Useful Group
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot
Choreographed by Arturo Lyons and Omari Wiles
Directed by Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch

Although not every character is listed as such, the vast majority of the cast will be BIPOC to reflect a
present-day New York City.
NOTE: This is a production of the musical CATS reimagined within the context of the Ballroom Scene. The reimagination will take place at a Ball: a competition that, through multiple categories, invites an unapologetic celebration of the self. Please note that all characters in this production are human, not literal “cats”. All ages are suggestions to capture the character’s essence and their relationship to the scene. Gender identities mentioned in the character descriptions are to describe the characters; many roles may have flexibility with gender including throughout the show. Ballroom was created as something that is for everyone. Although not every character is listed as such, it is important to this creative team that people of the global majority (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) are represented across this cast.
While some roles specify singing or dancing, all roles will require some of both. In addition, all roles except Deuteronomy, Grizabella, Munkustrap, and Gus will also play ensemble parts, portraying multiple characters and competing in multiple categories.

Not long ago. And not far from now. In the aftermath of unspeakable tragedy, an opportunistic reporter visits a sacred space defiled by American violence, in search of a story ready made for Hollywood — only to find that history repeats itself too soon, and too close to home. A PAC NYC World Premiere from the acclaimed artistic team of Tony Award-winning choreographer / dancer / director / writer Bill T. Jones (Fela!, Spring Awakening), poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph (We Shall Not Be Moved), composer Tamar-kali (Mudbound) and dramaturg Lauren Whitehead (Between the World and Me: Onstage at the Apollo). Watch Night fuses melodies rooted in spirituals, percussive breath and fiery opera with the urgency of slam poetry and Bill T. Jones’ dynamic staging to create an immersive exploration of justice and forgiveness in the face of deadly rage.
