A note about casting (adopted from language with consent originally created by Kevin Kantor and Emily Traquin of actors Theatre of Louisville):

Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

PHIL CONNORS

35+

Over it and everybody, a burned-out TV weatherman, resentful, entitled. Phil casts a long shadow over people he sees as beneath him. The show starts out as a head-trip of a farce, so physical agility and comedy skills (even dance) are a plus. Power vocal range- from folk, to rock, to Broadway- with acting chops and emotional accessibility to match. Tragi-comic, truthful, dark, deep, ultimately wins our hearts with his sincere exuberance and euphoria as he is transformed.

RITA

30+

A TV producer, professional, down to earth, empath, but knows what she wants, and knows what she does not want even more. The very real, relatable, sweet heart at the core of the story but not without her own quirks and can be very funny. A rock-infused, soprano-belt, with a big emotional range.

NANCY

25+

A surprisingly frank, revealing character. Self-aware, up against the odds, a fatalistic surrender to her never-changing lot in life as the “pretty one.” In a rut of her own. Extremely sympathetic, sadly poignant with smiling resignation.

TOWNSPEOPLE OF PUNXSUTAWNEY

20s+

Ned Ryerson, Gus, Ralph, Chubby Man, Mrs. Lancaster (Doris), Debbie, Fred, Sheriff, Jeff (Sheriff’s Son) Deputy, Old Jenson, Hot Dog Vendor, Larry, Buster, Lady Storm Chaser, Joelle, Piano Teacher – singing, dancing, actors representing a wide range of detailed character studies.

These folks have a fantastical yet small hometown charm about them. For one day a year, they are the most upbeat, the sweetest, most enthusiastic bunch of characters. Community pride in the tradition of Feb 2nd, Groundhog Day, with the eyes of everyone in America upon their town, Punxsutawney, is everything to them. Groundhog merch and swag is worn everywhere and the cheeriness repeated over and over again is in sharp contrast to Phil Connors resentment at simply being there.
