Off Broadway Expected salary: $783/week minimum.

SEEKING

Equity actors for 1 available role and understudies. For all other roles that have been cast, actors will be considered for possible replacements if needed.

All SM/ASM positions have been filled.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a short song. The music of the show is sung as an a cappella chamber choir. Please bring sheet music in the correct key: accompanist provided but may not transpose.

BREAKDOWN

OCTET: Three-time Tony Award-nominee Dave Malloy (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) begins his Residency 5 as Signature’s first musical theatre writer with the world premiere musical Octet, directed by Annie Tippe (Ghost Quartet). Featuring a score for an a cappella chamber choir and an original libretto inspired by internet comment boards, scientific debates, religious texts, and Sufi poetry, Octet explores addiction and nihilism within the messy context of 21st century technology.

NOTE: Must be comfortable with extremely difficult harmony, close harmonies, one voice to a part. Experience with a cappella singing a plus.

SEEKING:

JESSICA
(Soprano 1, G3-A5) Female, Early 30s. Frenetic, uncentered; dealing with the aftermath of a viral video. Craving a reset, away from the hate.

TOBY
Role (Tenor 1, C2-A4) Male, Late 20s. A misanthropic conspiracy theorist. Too smart for his own good. Angry, unsettled, distrustful. Rants.

PAULA
Role CAST. (Alto 2, D#3-D5) Female, Late 40s. The leader of this evening’s meeting. Reserved and guarded, she struggles with her marriage, but wears a face of serenity and wisdom.

PETER
Role CAST (Bass 1, C2-F#4) Male, Mid 20s. Awkward, dopey, endearing. Addicted to online gaming. Outwardly happy-go-lucky, but masking some demons.

KARLY
Role CAST (Alto 1, F3-D5) Female, Late 20s. Smart, sharp. An actress frustrated by the inappropriate attention by men.

JIM
Role CAST (Bass 2, B1-D4) Male, Early 30s. Insecure, socially isolated, depressed, bitter. Craves attention, but feels like a failure.

MARVIN
Role CAST (Tenor 2 C2-G#4) Male, Early 40s. A highly educated neurochemist having a crisis of faith. Newly a father. Even-tempered and pragmatic, but overwhelmed by the limitless possibilities of the world.

VELMA
Role CAST (Soprano 2, F3-F5) Female, Early 20s. The newcomer to the group. Full of energy, optimistic and good, but profoundly socially awkward. Grew up with the internet and technology.
