BREAKDOWN

SEEKING:

[YASIR/MAZIN] Male, mid 30s-mid 40s, Iraqi. YASIR in the first act and MAZIN in the second act. Represents socialized male roles, the patriarch figures. YASIR is charming and has a playful optimism to his essence. In contrast, MAZIN can be stubborn in his thinking, though he does try to push himself out of the traditional norms over the course of the play. He is reserved and a bit skeptical. Arabic speakers a plus. Please denote level of Arabic fluency in your submission.

[KARIMA/LAYAL] Female, mid 30s-mid 40s, Iraqi. KARIMA in the first act and LAYAL in the second act. KARIMA is a decision maker, the matriarch figure, doesn’t shy away from conflict, very protective of her children and the home. LAYAL is thrust into motherhood at an early age when she must raise her younger siblings, and she quickly adapts to this challenge. Both roles are loving, dutiful, creative, dreamers. Arabic speakers a plus. Please denote level of Arabic fluency in your submission.

[YOUNG MAZIN/YOUSIF] Male, early-mid 20s, Iraqi. YOUNG MAZIN in the first act and YOUSIF in the second act. YOUNG MAZIN is struggling to find himself, has an inner darkness and a seriousness about him, thrives on adrenaline, a rebel. Portrays confidence to others, but inside feels out of place most of the time. YOUSIF is the lost soul in a family of confident people, wears his heart on his sleeve, can be overly analytical. He is yearning to find his place in the world. Has a coolness and effortless attractiveness to him. Has been exploring his queer identity longer than his close friend AMIN. SWANA actors are encouraged to submit.

[SAHIR/AMIN] Male, early-mid 20s, Iraqi. SAHIR in the first act and AMIN in the second act. SAHIR is cool-headed, knows how to make others feel good, a dreamer, a fighter, and a romantic. AMIN has an inner lightness and innocence about him while also feeling an obligation to his family, that he feels conflicted about. More recently exploring his queer identity and on a path of self-discovery. SWANA actors are encouraged to submit.

[YOUNG LAYAL/MARWA] early-mid 20s, Iraqi. YOUNG LAYAL (female) in the first act and MARWA (non-binary) in the second act. YOUNG LAYAL is a just married ingenue who feels her whole life is ahead of her. She is a spark of light within her family. Optimistic, a dreamer, a romantic, though she also knows the importance of responsibility and duty, especially when it comes to her family. MARWA is intelligent, woke, and sure of themselves. An activist. They have a hard shell which softens over the course of the play. Trying to balance their responsibility and duty to the family, with their own desires and what they want out of life. Navigating their queer identity in a family that has some traditional values.
