Breakdown

The story is portrayed briefly in 1981 and primarily over several weeks in August 2004. The action takes place in three rooms in the home of Ray and Jane Deluso on Long Island, New York (NY accent optional, but NOT essential).

Seeking:

RAY DELUSO
(60 for most of the play, though he is 23 years younger in the first scene) He is a highly decorated Vietnam veteran now worn down by his job as a general contractor. Earlier in his life while employed as a leading air traffic controller, he made a life altering decision, one he believed to be in the best interest and welfare of his country. Now that decision threatens to destroy him, as well as the two most important people in his life.

JANE DELUSO
(Late 50s for most of the play, early 30s at the start) An attractive elementary school teacher, RAY’s wife is a loving spouse, who genuinely adores her husband and just wants to do the right thing in an extremely difficult set of circumstances. She is still connected to BUZZ, the husband of her deceased best friend, a friendship that incorrectly makes RAY jealous. Her relationship with her pampered adult daughter, TESS, is most contentious.

BUZZ ADAMS
(60 for most of the play, 37 in the first scene) Now a widower of three years and recently retired, he looks much younger than RAY, his boyhood friend and army buddy. In fact, BUZZ saved RAY’s life in Vietnam. Still struggling to hold onto his friendship with RAY’s wife, JANE, who had been his own wife’s best friend, this well-built and attractive man cannot undo RAY’s hatred, a hatred that began 23 years earlier when BUZZ performed an act of disloyalty.

TESS DELUSO
(26) RAY and JANE’s daughter is a wannabe actress who lacks the ambition and drive one needs to have a career. She should be pretty, though her penchant for snacking on the wrong foods has made her over-weight, particularly for the type of roles she’s pursuing. Used to her father paying her bills and excusing her lack of direction, and though she no longer lives at home, her clashes with her mother are becoming more profound. Her new love interest, BUZZ’s son David, becomes the catalyst that ignites old family wounds.

ONE MALE UNDERSTUDY
To cover both RAY and BUZZ.
