BREAKDOWN

Ibsen's Ghost

by Charles Busch

directed by Carl Andress

Seeking:

Wolf Dahlquist: Male Presenting; Any Ethnicity; (Mid 50’s-Early 60’s) A sailor who has been at sea since he was 18 years old. He is Ibsen’s illegitimate son, who comes to his late father’s home seeking a souvenir of the father he never knew, from Ibsen’s widow, Suzannah. He has a touch of Ibsen the poet in his brash yet sensitive nature. He falls in love with Suzannah. Seriocomic, romantic leading man.

Magdalene Thoresen: Female Presenting; Any Ethnicity; (Mid-60’s to Mid-70’s) Suzannah Ibsen’s formidable stepmother and former nanny. A successful writer in her own right, she is quick-witted, strong-willed, worldly and sophisticated with a healthy appetite and enthusiasm for life. She cares deeply for Suzannah and accepts her stepdaughter’s criticisms in the hope of achieving peace between them.

Roles cast:

Suzannah Ibsen (Role is Cast)
Hannah Solberg (Role is cast)
George Elsted / Rat wife (Role is cast)
Gerda (Role is cast)

The Club

Set in 1968

Seeking:

Anna Barrows, late-thirties, white: housewife, acerbic, sharp-tongued, takes no prisoners. In another
era, would not work only at home.

Richard Barrows, early-forties, white: Anna’s husband, ad executive; seems to be Anna’s match, but
perhaps not as biting.

Olive Barrows, their thirteen-year-old daughter, white: smart, like her parents, but not yet jaded. Could be a flower child in a few years.

Peter Kendricks, late-thirties, Black: ad executive with Richard. Realizes his precarious place as a
Black man in a white business and a white neighborhood, but believes his friendships with his white
friends are real. Genuine, sincere.

Angela Kendricks, late-thirties, Black: Peter’s wife, a journalist, and pregnant with her and Peter’s first
child. Strong, empathetic. Excited to be starting a family in a world that she believes is moving
forward.

John Willows, late-thirties, white: head of the membership at the country club and one of Richard and
Peter’s client at the ad agency. Might not be wholly trustworthy.

Marianne Willows, mid-twenties, white: John’s younger wife. Works at home, but no children yet. A
little flakey, but it becomes clear that there’s a lot more beneath the surface of that flighty exterior.

Tick Tick Boom!

JONATHAN: (30s – Any Ethnicity) tenor, Range: A2 – A4; struggling composer on the brink of his 30th
birthday, struggling to find what is most important to him; has pressure to make money, settle down
with his girlfriend, and become successful as a writer; vibrant around his friends, but introverted
elsewhere; basic piano skills a plus.

SUSAN: (30s – Any Ethnicity) mezzo with strong belt, Range: A3 – D5; Jonathan’s longtime girlfriend;
strong, confident, and assertive.

MICHAEL: (30s – Any Ethnicity) baritone, Range: Bb2 – Gb4; Jonathan’s best friend from childhood;
warm, funny and kind; outgoing, brings much joy to Jonathan’s life; A former actor-turned-market
research executive
