BREAKDOWN

FABULATION, OR THE RE-EDUCATION OF UNDINE

We also recognize that the characters are written on the binary (use she/her and he/him pronouns) and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to audition for the roles they most identify with. In reference to the descriptions below - these are descriptions of the characters as identified in the script and in collaboration with the creative team. They are not meant to be exhaustive of who should play these roles and we seek to cast expansively and intentionally with consideration of race/ethnicity, gender, body type, and ability.

SYNOPSIS: FABULATION, OR THE RE-EDUCATION OF UNDINE, is a social satire that follows successful and high powered African-American publicist Undine Barnes Calles on an unexpected journey, after her smooth-talking but dishonest husband Hervé disappears with her hard-earned fortune. Suddenly bankrupt, homeless, and pregnant, Undine returns to her childhood home in Brooklyn’s Walt Whitman projects, where she reunites with the family and friends she attempted to leave behind. There she faces the realities of her new life, rediscovers where she came from, and gains a fresh perspective on her priorities for her future.

SEEKING:

Undine (Black, female-identifying, mid to late 30s) A high-powered executive at a PR firm who loses everything but gains a sense of perspective in the process; a self-made woman who endures with humor and honesty. Has a strong command of movement.

Hervé/As Cast (Argentinian, male-identifying, mid to late 30s) Undine's sophisticated yet deceitful spouse. He's a charming, cunning, self-assured, cultured, and privileged socialite. Has a strong command of movement.

Accountant/As Cast (Open ethnicity, male-identifying, mid-30s) Undine’s financial advisor, who shares the news of her bankruptcy with her. He’s practical, grounded, and realistic about Undine’s circumstances.

Stephie/As Cast (Open ethnicity, female-identifying, early 20s) Undine’s assistant at the PR firm. Stephie is glamorous, bold, and status-driven; yet self-conscious, spacy and a people-pleaser.

Flow/As Cast (Black, male-identifying, late 20s to early 30s) Undine’s brother, who works as a security guard and writes free-flowing hip-hop rhymes that look at the struggles of black existence and are inspired by the Brer Rabbit fable. He is passionate, creative, and quick with a comeback. Has adept rapping abilities and a strong command of movement.

Grandma/As Cast (Black, female-identifying, 70s) Undine’s grandmother, who recently became addicted to heroin. She’s a survivor, insistent on manifesting late-life joy in her own way.

Mother/As Cast (Black, female-identifying, 50s) Undine’s mother, who works as a security guard and is more willing to welcome Undine back into the family. She’s a warm peace-maker, though a bit unwilling to see things as they are.

Father/As Cast (Black, male-identifying, 50s) Undine’s father, he resents the way Undine left her family behind. He’s a classic old school Brooklynite who loves telling a good story.
