BREAKDOWN
SYNOPSIS:
With a mumps outbreak, a private school in Berkeley, California called Eureka Day, becomes a microcosm of our larger society as Jonathan Spector’s comedy plunges headlong into the knotty issues of vaccines and how we measure private preference against public health and how we decide who gets to decide. Though written pre-Covid, Eureka Day could hardly be more timely or more needed as Spector mines laughter from our foibles while eliciting empathy for our sometimes valiant and sometimes valiantly misguided efforts.
SEEKING:
SUZANNE: female identifying, 40’s-early 50’s, White. A parent. She is very invested in the school and has the easy assurance of privilege. Liberal and vocal. Strong willed and thinks she’s always in the right. From the midwest. Has a home worth three million dollars (though she’ll tell you it was much much much cheaper when they bought) but thinks of herself as “comfortable” rather than “wealthy”.
CARINA: female identifying, early 40’s, Black or biracial Black/White. A parent. Unassuming but very smart. Strong and determined. She starts as an outsider and takes over the program by the end of the play. She’s skilled at landing in a new environment and figuring out the rules. She’s a joiner.
MEIKO: female identifying, late 30’s, biracial Asian/White. A parent. She knits. On the quiet side; keeps her stress inside. A landscape architect, which she’s good at but a little bored by. Would sort of like to have another child but feels like she’s too old to think about doing it alone, again.
ELI: male identifying, late 30’s, White. Jewish or half-Jewish. A parent. A very successful tech millionaire. Confident and used to getting his way. A big puppy dog. An expert pickler, competitive rock climber, manager of family wealth.
