BREAKDOWN

CANNED GOODS

SYNOPSIS: Canned Goods by Erik Kahn brings to life Hitler’s staging of a fake attack on Germany to justify his invasion of Poland in 1939. This tense historical drama tells the story of the human beings forced to play leading roles in a drama they want no part of, and one that launched World War II.

SEEKING:

[Franciszek Honiok] male. A 43-year-old German farmer, Franciszek Honiok was arrested by the SS in the village of Polomia (a small town on the border of Germany and Poland) on August 30, 1939. Not much is known about Honiok, other than that he was an unmarried Catholic who may have been involved in resistance against German rule in the Silesian region of Poland. Patel Honiok, Franciszek’s nephew and only surviving relative, wrote “Nobody has ever wanted to talk about what happened – it’s always been secret. The Germans were in control of us until 1945 and then the Russians took over and they had no interest in digging up the truth about what had happened back at the start of the war.”

[Alfred Naujocks] male. Naujocks was an SS Sturmbannfuhrer, or Major, recruited by Reinhard Heydrich. Historian Robert Wistrich wrote that Naujocks was a “well known amateur boxer, frequently involved in brawls with communists. In 1939, he was made head of the subsection III of the SD Ausland and put in charge of such special duties as fabricating false papers, passports, identity cards and forged notes for the SD agents operating abroad.” Naujocks testified but was not prosecuted at Nuremberg for war crimes. He was imprisoned for three years on war crime charges brought in Denmark. After prison, he lived in Hamburg, Germany until his death in 1960.

[Szymon Birnbaum] male, Jewish. (Professor of Philosophy and Religion/Prisoner). Birnbaum is a fictional character. According to Nuremberg transcripts, there were several prisoners transferred from Dachau and later used for the Grandmother Died operation at Gliwice. The names and biographical information of the inmates used as Canned Goods in the Grandmother Died operation is unknown.

[Walter Kruger] male. (Janitor/Prisoner) Kruger is another fictional character. He is a Dachau prisoner taken from the concentration camp - housed in a cell with Birnbaum.

[Reinhard Heydrich] (Senior Nazi official head of the Gestapo and SD, directly reporting to Heinrich Himmler). Hitler described Heydrich as “The Man with the Iron Heart.” Heydrich organized Kristallnacht and also ran the Einsatzgruppen, the special forces that worked with the German army to murder Jews and others by mass shooting and gassing. Heydrich was killed in an attack by Czech and Slovak partisans in 1942. The Germans responded by killing the occupants of the towns of Lidice and Lezaky in reprisals – even though Heydrich’s assassins had no links to the two towns.

[Heinrich Muller] male. (Senior SS officer who worked closely with and reported to Heydrich) — Muller was a high-level officer involved in the planning and execution of the Holocaust. After the war, Muller remained at large and was never captured or killed.

[Guard] male. A low-level enlisted SS soldier guarding the prisoners.
