Full title: “BIG FISH - A Musical of Epic Proportions”. Rollicking fantasy set in the American South. Centers on the charismatic Edward Bloom, whose impossible stories of his life’s epic adventures frustrate his son Will. Now, with Edward on his deathbed, Will must embark on his own journey to find out who his father really is, unraveling the man from the myth, the truth from the tall tales.
Seeking strong Dancers and Singers (M/F) to make up the Ensemble, including featured characters, in the Chicago (pre-Broadway) production:
Ensemble Men:
Strong movers and singers for a range of characters: Salesmen, USO Dancers, Milkmen. Wide variety of types. Acrobats a plus. Also cover principal roles.
Ensemble Women:
Strong dancers and singers for a range of characters: Townsfolk, USO Dancers, Mermaid. Also cover principal roles. Between 5’6 and 5’10. Tap dance, ballet and acrobatics a plus.
Ensemble characters include
Karl The Giant
20s - late 30s. A “monster” who arrives at Edward’s childhood small town, Karl is in fact a sad-sack loner with a gift for big numbers. His comedy is like Eeyore from “Winnie the Pooh”. Karl’s height will be augmented for fantasy sequences, but the actor himself MUST BE VERY TALL (6’5”+). Basso profundo with a solid low E.
The Witch:
Late 30s-60s. Fortune-telling leader of a backwoods coven. Immediately knows Edward Bloom is special. The Witch is powerful and charismatic; a dark Dolly Parton. MUST have a big voice that can shiver souls. Big belt to F# and lives up in that range.
Jenny Hill:
20s – mid 30s (actress also plays Jenny as a teenager, and in her mid 50s). Edward’s high school cheerleader girlfriend. Takes him at his word when he promises he’ll return after seeing the world. A series of bad choices leads her to living in a swamp shack, ready to be killed by an impending flood. Mezzo or soprano.
Josephine:
20s, French person of color. Will’s lovely and funny wife, who is pregnant through most of the story. She’s charmed by Edward, and happily inserts herself into his stories. Mezzo or soprano.
Amos Calloway:
40s. Owner of the Calloway Circus; a down-market PT Barnum with a secret. Promises to tell Edward the name of his true love in return for years of back-breaking labor. Needs STRONG comic chops. Big vaudeville part. High baritone or tenor, to high A flat.
Dr. Bennett / Others:
Track age: 30s-60s. Bennett: African American, 60s. Edward’s doctor and close friend.
Don Price:
20s-30s (actor also plays Don as a teenager). Edward’s Bloom’s lifelong nemesis, a hot-headed bully. Needs STRONG comic chops. Baritone.
Zacky Price
20s-30s (actor also plays Zacky as a teenager, and in his late 40s). Don’s spastic and easily-spooked younger brother, who ultimately becomes instrumental in helping save the town of Ashton. Needs STRONG comic chops. Tenor to sustained B flat.
Mayor:
40s. The good-hearted mayor of Ashton, who ultimately turns into a drunk when his town is slated for destruction. Baritone.
