NOTE: RENT is a rock opera set in New York’s Lower East Side in the shadow of AIDS in the late 80s/early 90s. We encourage performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, and ages, as well as performers with disabilities, to submit.
Roger Davis: A struggling musician and former drug addict. He is reminiscent of Kurt Cobain. Roommates with Mark in the loft and battles with being HIV-positive. Male Identifying. Age: 20 to 25. Vocal range: A4-F2.
Mark Cohen: Filmmaker and video artist. Knee deep in his own soul-searching, Mark is the typical young artist. He and Roger are roommates in the loft. A bit of a nerd. Male Identifying. Age: 20 to 30. Vocal range: G4-A2.
Tom Collins: A computer genius and liberal professor. He is a nurturer with a smooth and relaxed disposition. Used to be a roommate in the loft and is HIV-positive. African-American. Male Identifying. Age: 25 to 35. Vocal range: A4-F#2.
Benjamin Coffin III: The landlord of Mark and Roger's apartment building. A former roommate in the loft, Benny traded in his personal morals for power and wealth. African American, Latin, or Asian. Male Identifying. Age: 25 to 35. Vocal range: F#4-Bb2.
Joanne Jefferson: A public interest lawyer and headstrong lesbian. She is smart and purposeful in all her decisions. Carries on a tumultuous relationship with Maureen. Female Identifying. Age: 25 to 40. Vocal range: E5-G3.
Angel Dumott Schunard: The eccentric HIV-positive street drummer. A drag queen with an incredible gift of dance and a magnetic personality. He becomes Tom's lover. African American, Latin, or Asian. Male Identifying. Age: 20 to 30. Vocal range: A4-C3.
Mimi Marquez: An HIV-positive stripper with drug addictions. Slender and sickly, she conceals it all at her job in the local strip club. She lives in the same building as the loft. Latina. Female Identifying. Age: 18 to 21. Vocal range: E5-Eb3.
Maureen Johnson: An unpredictably zany performance artist. Maureen oozes sexuality and used to live in the loft. She has recently dumped Mark for Joanne. Female Identifying. Age: 20 to 25. Vocal range: F5-C4.
BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL
[CAROLE KING] (Principal. Ages from 16-29) An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, self-deprecating, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good natured, unassuming and often the peace maker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music. Has a powerful, distinctive voice.
[GERRY GOFFIN] (Principal. Ages from late teens-late 20s) Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. He is smoldering, dark & handsome with a rebel vibe. Although sexy, he is innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more. Sings well. Baritone/tenor.
[CYNTHIA WEIL] (Principal. Ages from late teens-late 20s) A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart & chic with a quick wit. Although self-confident, & at times sarcastic, she is also deeply likeable. A go-getter who doesn’t take no for an answer. Has strong comic timing and sings extremely well. Belt.
[BARRY MANN] (Principal. Ages from late teens-late 20s) High rock tenor. A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. He is good natured, appealing & neurotic. Ambitious, but likeable. Has a great voice. A strong high rock tenor.
[DON KIRSCHNER] (Principal. Mid 30s - Late 40s) An influential music publisher and producer. He is a fast talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker. NON-SINGING ROLE.
[GENIE] (Principal. 40s-50s) Carole’s Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes. Will sing offstage.
