Equity actors for roles in Asolo Repertory Theatre's 2023-24 Season (See breakdown).

PREPARATION

For Dramatic Auditions please prepare two monologues, no more than two minutes total. For Musical Auditions please prepare either two short contrasting cuts, or 16 bars of a song and a one-minute contemporary monologue. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring a copy of your headshot and résumé stapled together.

[MATTHEW HARRISON BRADY]: 50s+, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Renowned lawyer, orator and former U.S. Presidential candidate who believes in Biblical literalism. Travels to Hillsboro to prosecute a high school science teacher for teaching evolution in violation of state law.

[E.K. HORNBECK]: 20s-40s, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Cynical, wisecracking atheist who covers the trial for The Baltimore Herald.

[MAYOR]: 40s-50s, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Hillsboro's top elected official. Excited by the arrival of Brady.

[REV. JEREMIAH BROWN]: 40s-50s, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Pastor and figure of religious authority in Hillsboro. Preaches fear of God and the punishment of sinners. Father to Rachel.

[MEEKER]: 30s-40s, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. The bailiff at the Hillsboro courthouse. Good-natured and friendly towards the defendant.

[MR. GOODFELLOW/ JUDGE]: 40s-60s, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Mr. Goodfellow is a storekeeper. The Judge is a Hillsboro county court judge who presides over the trial. While the judge conducts the trial mostly impartially, he sympathizes with the anti evolution views of most Hillsboro townspeople.

[BERTRAM CATES]: 20s-30s, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. A young science teacher and the defendant in the trial; Cates has been arrested for teaching his students Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, which is against state law; he is a kind and soft-spoken man, and is secretly Rachel Brown’s beau.

[ELIJAH/ TOM DAVENPORT]: 20s-40s, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Elijah is a wild mountain man who sells Bibles. Davenport is the local district attorney who assists Brady with the prosecution.

[SILLERS & OTHERS]: 20s-50s, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Sillers is a member of the jury. The Hawker sells hotdogs to the crowd arriving into town for the trial.

[BANNISTER & OTHERS]: 20s-50s, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. A member of the jury; Bannister has read neither Darwin nor the Bible because he is illiterate.

[DUNLAP & OTHERS]: 20s+, male-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Dunlap is a farmer and cabinetmaker who stands as a potential juror, but Drummond dismisses him because of his enthusiastic support of Brady.

[MRS. SARAH BRADY]: 40s-50s, female-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. The polished wife of a politician. She is concerned about her husband's health; she monitors his actions and cautions him frequently.

[MRS. BLAIR/ RUETERS WOMAN]: 30s-40s, female-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Mrs. Blair is the mother of Cates’ student. The Reuter’s woman is a British reporter.

[RACHEL BROWN]: 20s, female-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. The daughter of Reverend Brown who teaches second grade at the same school as her secret beau, Bertram Cates. Rachel has grown up without a mother and in a home that fears God.

[MRS. KREBBS/ HARRIET ESTERBROOK]: 20s-50s, female-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Mrs. Krebbs is an outspoken Hillsboro resident. Esterbrook broadcasts the announcement of the verdict and Cates’s sentencing on the radio.

[MRS. LOOMIS/ ORGAN GRINDER]: 20s-40S, female-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Mrs. Loomis is the mother of Melinda. The organ grinder performs with a monkey for the arriving crowds.

[MRS. BOLLINGER]: 20s+, female-identifying, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Ensemble.

She dreams of opening her own beauty parlor for Black women. Her desire to be loved clouds her judgement. (Intimate moments required.)

[MRS. DICKSON]: 50s, female-identifying, Black, nondisabled or disabled. An energetic widow who runs the rooming house where Esther lives. She has known Esther for nearly 20 years and feels a deep maternal fondness for her. She can be as harsh as she is compassionate.

[MRS. VAN BUREN]: 30s, female-identifying, white, nondisabled or disabled. A wealthy white woman for whom Esther sews lingerie. Mrs. Van Buren is a part of New York high society and is mostly successful at disguising her Southern roots. She hopes lingerie will revive her failing marriage but she mostly just longs to be noticed and touched. (Intimate moments required.)

[MR. MARKS]: 30s, male-identifying, Jewish, nondisabled or disabled. Has an Eastern European accent. Mr. Marks is a gentle and passionate fabric seller. Despite their differences, he and Esther feel strongly drawn to each other. They share a sensuous pleasure in beautiful fabrics.

[MAYME]: 30s, female-identifying, Black, nondisabled or disabled. Mayme is a sex worker who initially moved to New York in the hope of playing ragtime piano in fancy clubs. She and Esther confide in each other. (Intimate moments required.)

[GEORGE]: 30s, male-identifying, Black Barbadian, nondisabled or disabled. Has a Barbadian accent. A laborer from Barbados who initiates written correspondence with Esther. A New York murder mystery writer who loves Margot, expressing her love in letters that Tony discovers and uses to blackmail his wife. [JUROR 10]: 40s-50s, male-identifying, white, nondisabled or disabled. Course, belligerent, entertaining. Owns several commercial garages. Has a bad summer cold and a bad opinion of anyone different from himself.

[JUROR 11]: 40s, male-identifying, white, nondisabled or disabled. Soft-spoken, keen mind, polite. A watchmaker from middle Europe. A post-war immigrant.
