CARTER SMITH (Mid–late 30s, Male, White) — Teacher. A former golden boy, smart and sensitive, now a great teacher: charming, engaging, goofy.
SHELBY HOLCOMB (16, Female) — Student. Her brain works faster than her mouth, but her mouth works pretty dang fast. People have always underestimated her.
BETH POWELL (17, Female) — Student. Nervous, ambitious, and enthusiastic — like if Rory Gilmore and Paris Geller had a baby and raised her in the Deep South.
NELL SHAW (16, Female, Black) — Student from Atlanta. Grounded and sincere, genuinely curious and a quick study.
Ivy Watkins (17, Female) — Student, fiercely loyal and always well-intentioned. From money; resist the urge to play her as a mean girl.
Raelynn Nix (16, Female) — Student. A cheerleader type who’s always lived her life by other people’s standards; she was paying attention and keeping score.
Mason Adams (17, Male) — Student. He’s never really tried before and is surprised by how good it feels. Earnest and affable.
Lee Turner (16, Male, White) — Student. A Carhartt-wearing good ol’ boy; deeply insecure and without the tools to deal with it.
Bailey Gallagher (24, Female) — Counselor. Sweet in all the ways Southern women are supposed to be. This is her first real job out of college; she’s trying her best.

CHRIS (White, She/Her, E3–E5, 16) — 16-year-old girl in crisis. She’s the guide through the narrative’s emotional minefield, caught between the life she thought she had and the life she has been dropped into. Terrified she will turn out like her father, but scared to let go completely. Her humor is her armor and weapon; underneath she is a scrappy fighter and survivor with wit and humor.
JOHN GRADY (White, He/Him, A3–F4, 45) — Chris’ father. Charming, magnetic, restless eyes, endlessly persuasive. A man who wants to be understood despite what everyone knows about him.
MICHELLE (White, She/Her, Gb3–F5, 36) — Chris’s mother. A woman fleeing her own shame; driven by survival and reparation, unsure how to mother the child she abandoned. Not cold, but careful, cracking open in private moments. A battleground of guilt, fear, and untapped maternal love. She runs a flower shop out of her house with her partner, Ben.
BEN (Black, He/Him, B3–G#4, 40) — Michelle’s partner and step-father to Chris. Tender, warm, grounded; the emotional opposite of John. Looking for an actor with natural emotional gravity.
TREVOR (He/They, C3–Bb5, 16) — Chris’s nonbinary classmate and neighbor. Funny, compassionate, vulnerable. At the start of their gender-identity journey. Charismatic and caring; makes it their mission to embrace the underdogs. (This role has been cast.)
LILLIAN CLARKE (She/Her, G3–F5, 30–60) — Charismatic, razor-smart host of the true-crime podcast Bloody Good. Comedic precision, performative warmth, British accent; seductive, funny, frightening, and credible all at once. Her power comes from control, momentum, and an unshakeable belief in her own narrative.
