BREAKDOWN
Roy M. Cohn (50s-60s)—Successful New York lawyer and unofficial power broker. Extremely smart, cunning and tremendously vicious; Roy's hatred and denial of most everything in his life, including his battle with AIDS, isolates him further and further from the community around him; a closeted homosexual, he is full of hate and bile; actor also plays Prior 2 and The Angel Antarctica.
Joseph Porter Pitt (25-35)—Chief clerk for Justice Theodore Wilson of the Federal Court of Appeals, Second Circuit. Caucasian. Handsome, Republican lawyer who is deeply closeted; Mormon; married to Harper; actor also plays Prior 1, The Eskimo, The Father, The Angel Europa. Some nudity required.
Harper Amity Pitt (25-35)—Joe’s wife, an agoraphobic with a mild valium addiction. Her crippling fears have alienated her from the world and from her husband, who she knows has demons of his own. She often escapes reality in a series of fascinating and revealing hallucinations; actor also plays Martin Heller and the Angel Africanii. Some nudity required.
Louis Ironson (25-30s)—A word processor working for the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Extremely intelligent, neurotic, anxious, emotionally fragile. Louis abandons his lover Prior when Prior reveals he has AIDS, which fills him with conflict and guilt; actor also plays The Angel Australia.
Prior Walter (25-30s)—Louis’s boyfriend; occasionally works as a club designer or caterer, otherwise lives very modestly but with great style off a small trust fund. Extremely charismatic and bitingly witty, he also reveals himself to be frail, intense and vulnerable; The Angel appears to him; he becomes the prophet of the Great Work; actor also plays The Man in the Park. Some nudity required.
Hannah Porter Pitt (50s-70s)—Joe’s mother, currently residing in Salt Lake City, living off her deceased husband’s pension. Opinionated, practically minded; a devout Mormon, she moves to New York when Joe comes out to her, and her warmth is revealed when she meets and cares for Prior. Actress also plays Rabbi Isidor Chemelwitz, Henry, Ethel Rosenberg, Aleksii Antedilluvianovich Prelapsarianov, and the Angel Asiatica.
Belize (20s-30s)—A former drag queen and former lover of Prior’s. A registered nurse. Belize’s name was originally Norman Arriaga; Belize is a drag name that stuck. Prior s best friend and Roy's caretaker; extremely stylish with a personality to match, he is all flair; actor also plays Mr. Lies, The Angel Oceania, and the voice of Caleb.
The Angel—Four divine emanations, Fluor, Phosphor, Lumen and Candle; manifest in One: the Continental Principality of America. She has magnificent steel-gray wings. Terrifying and powerful. Role requires strong physical theatre background and vocal prowess; actor also plays Emily, Sister Ella Chapter, a Homeless Woman, the voice of Orrin, and the voice of The Mother
