Buntport is preparing to launch Season 21, complete with popular remounts, offnight programming, and their 50th full-length collaboratively created play. Buntport is also committed to removing as many barriers as possible for both the people making art in Denver’s community and the people who want to enjoy it.
Buntport Theater Company is set to release a filmed version of their still unseen production Cabaret De Profundis or How To Sing While Ugly Crying. March 13th, 2020 was the day that Buntport's 49th full-length original play was set to debut. It is also the day that Buntport shut its doors to the public.
In a time when plans are hard to make very far in advance, press releases become ... more nebulous. While Buntport Theater Company is announcing new programs, this really is a general check in.
A comedy about grief, dirty woodcuts, and one of the wonders of the world... Based loosely on the real life Artemisia II of Caria, Cabaret De Profundis, or How to Sing While Ugly Crying is a cabaret-style evening featuring Hannah Duggan with local composer and pianist Nathan Hall. You'll learn about Artemisia, including her commissioning the creation of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and her penchant for mourning her husband's loss by drinking his ashes in her wine. And you'll be entertained by her non-sequiturs and side stories (yes, including a song about dirty woodcuts carved by monks). As Artemisia says herself, she'll go through all the stages of grief in 90 minutes or less. Featuring a mix of old classics and new compositions, this monologue-with-musical-numbers is a dark comedy with the emphasis on comedy.
After allowing audience members to vote on which Buntport classics they would like to see return to the stage, we are finally ready to announce that we will be remounting three productions in the lead up to the debut of our 50th full-length play at the end of our 20th season. Based on the tallies from both the on-line and in-person voting systems, we will be bring back Moby Dick Unread, Titus Andronicus! The Musical!, and Tommy Lee Jones Goes to Opera Alone. Other crowd favorites that made the top ten will be our first choices when remounting in future seasons.
