About this studio

PHILADANCO! The Philadelphia Dance Company is a non-profit professional dance company celebrated for its innovation and its preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance, performing nationally and internationally. It grew out of the Philadelphia School of Dance Arts, opened in autumn 1960 by founder/director Joan Myers Brown, which continues to operate as its teaching arm with studios at 9 North Preston Street (Philadanco Way) in West Philadelphia and 2100 East Washington Lane in West Oak Lane. The school teaches children, youth and adults at all levels: Pre-Dance/Children's Dance for ages 4-6, acrobatics and gymnastics from age 5, and from age 7 classical ballet using Cecchetti, R.A.D. and Russian methods, modern jazz drawing on authentic Black jazz forms and Afro-Caribbean rhythm, and rhythmic tap in the Henry Letang tradition. Pointe begins no earlier than age 10, and hip hop and Horton modern are offered to youth. Adult classes run in ballet, modern, tap, jazz and hip hop. The organization also runs training companies in residence, arts education outreach and annual student performances.
