Kulu Mele African Dance & Drum Ensemble was founded in Philadelphia in 1969 by Baba Robert Crowder and describes itself as the nation's longest-enduring African dance company. Its mission is to preserve and present traditional dance and music of Africa and the African diaspora while celebrating contemporary African American culture, drawing on West African, Afro-Cuban and diasporan traditions as well as hip hop. Artistic Director Dorothy Wilkie has led the company for more than 35 years; it performs year-round in Philadelphia schools, festivals and community settings, tours nationally and internationally, and premieres new work at an annual Thanksgiving-weekend show.
