About this studio
LAVA is a feminist acrobatic dance company based at 524 Bergen Street in Brooklyn, founded by artistic director Sarah East Johnson and performing since its 1998 debut. Its choreographic language combines acrobatics, trapeze, social dance, sports and contact improvisation with contemporary dance, and its work draws on geologic and anthropological ideas as metaphors for human relationships. The company has created 16 evening-length works and won an Obie and a Bessie, performing at City Center, The New Victory, BAM Fisher Center, Central Park Summerstage, The Kitchen and Dixon Place, and further afield at MASS MoCA, Jacob's Pillow, The Walker and the Tasmanian Circus Festival. Alongside performance it takes bookings for workshops and artist talks and runs classes from its Brooklyn studio, though the site notes the organization is currently restructuring.
