Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead plucks two minor characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and thrusts them into the spotlight…only to have them wrestle with mortality, existential dread and a pinch of classism.
The heroes are unceremoniously dropped into the middle of serious family drama…complete with lies, murder, betrayal and a surprisingly healthy dose of hilarity. Think Bill & Ted, R2-D2 & C-3PO, Vladimir & Estragon…and maybe even Beavis & Butt-Head.
Ricocheting through Hamlet’s plot like steel balls in a busted pinball machine, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern ask the grand questions: “Who are we?” “How did we get here?” “Where are we going?”
The cruel truth? The answer is right there in the title.
