Award-winning jazz keyboardist and composer Dan Karlsberg has recently released his second CD, 'Mission to Mars & Other Short Stories.' Karlsberg and his group of musicians will perform at Cincinnati's world-famous Blue Wisp Jazz Club on Saturday, July 24.

'Mission to Mars' features Karlsberg's New York-based sidemen Steve Whipple on bass, and Anthony "T" Lee on drums. Joining them on various tracks are Sandy Suskind on flute, Garin Webb on soprano and tenor sax, Oz Landesberg on tenor sax, and trombonist Marc Fields, who spent six years touring with the late Ray Charles.

'Mission to Mars' is comprised of eight tracks totaling nearly an hour of straight-ahead jazz infused with Karlsberg's unique blend of funk and fun. All but two of the tunes are original, each deeply personal, inspired by such diverse subjects as Karlsberg's friends, a children's TV show, a favorite dog, and even the late comedian Richard Pryor.

"I have always been a big fan of comedy, and Richard Pryor is at the top of my list," Karlsberg said. "His genius and humanity inspired me to compose a tune for him, titled "To Richard Pryor." I associate him with the 1970s, so I tried to capture some of the funkiness of that decade with this composition."

Two tracks on the album are covers: "Nereid" by the classical British composer Arnold Bax, and "Bali Hai" by Richard Rodgers, from the musical South Pacific.

In addition to performing and recording with other leading jazz artists, Karlsberg teaches annually at the acclaimed Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan, as well as at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).

The Dan Karlsberg Group will perform at The Blue Wisp Jazz Club, 318 E. Eighth Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202 on July 24 beginning at 8:30pm. Tickets are $10.
