THE OTHER SIDE OF SILENCE is a new opera that explores the life of Zari, a gender non-binary individual who uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication to engage with the world. The narrative, inspired by librettist Mark Steidl's own experiences, delves into themes of autonomy and the impact of technology on identity, as Zari navigates challenges related to a groundbreaking new communication device. The workshop performance features noted talents such as Meghan Kasanders, Jennifer Zetlan, Theo Hayes, and Isaiah Musik-Ayala. This collaborative effort, presented by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Opera Saratoga, and the Bergamot Quartet, highlights the intersection of art, advocacy, and technology for individuals with disabilities.
