Liberation Theatre Company (LTC) will present the New Voices Reading Series -- public readings of original full-length plays developed by the four playwrights in their 2019-2020 Writing Residency Program.

Readings will take place over four consecutive nights beginning Tuesday, March 24 through Friday, March 27, at Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, 304 W 47th Street New York, NY 10036. The event is free but an RSVP is required by emailing info@liberationtheatrecompany.org.

The schedule of play readings is as follows:

Tuesday, March 24, 7:00 pm

under one roof; or the evangelist by Jeremy O'Brian. Directed by Lauren Whitehead. A eulogy play set in present-day Mississippi Delta following one family who is reckoning with the death of their eldest patriarch, the father of Abel. But like any family, like any funeral, what comes up is a host of buried resentments that force each of them, in their own way, to bemoan the silence of their own lives.

Wednesday, March 25, 7:00 pm

THE PROBLEM WITH MAGIC, IS: by Johnny G. Lloyd. Directed by Christina Franklin. In a family owned magic shop dealing with gentrification and recent tragedy, a presence manifests.

Thursday, March 26, 7:00 pm

Knead Love by Camille Darby. Directed by Christopher Berry. Nina wants to leave Earth, Marcus wants a fresh start -- a fateful night in an abandoned Bronx bakery forces them to confront their fears and either embrace or change their futures.

Friday, March 27, 7:00 pm

[The Black Woman] and the Myth by Jessica Charles. Directed by Kim Brockington. A little black girl goes missing from her apartment in Harlem, and while her family and friends turn against each other and fall apart imagining a dark reality, the little black girl falls into the world of 'The Black Imagination' - a world of fun, fantasy, and fear - and on her journey home, a journey of mythical proportions, she finds something seemingly elusive: Black JOY. (Based on myths from Her Stories: African American Folktales, Fairy Tales and True Tales by Virginia Hamilton.)

Liberation Theatre Company is a Harlem-based independent theatrical producer and playwright development company established in 2009. The Writing Residency Program was started in 2017 to provide four early-career Black playwrights with dramaturgical and professional support towards the completion of the first draft of an original full-length play.

Support for the program has been provided by the New York State Council on the Arts and The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York.

They are currently inviting applications to participate in the fourth year of the program for 2020-2021. The deadline to submit is Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Submissions will only be accepted by using the form found at this link:
