LANTERNS Creators Reveal How Hal Jordan's Alien Pet Earl Was Born

Showrunner, executive producer, co-creator and writer Chris Mundy, writer and co-executive producer Vanessa Baden Kelly, and director and executive producer James Hawes sat down with host Juju Green on Lanterns: The Official Podcast to unpack Episode 2, "Trust Fall." The spoiler-filled conversation covered the making of the episode's car chase, the decision to separate John Stewart and Hal Jordan for stretches of the story, and the introduction of the villain Sinestro into the series.

Mundy explained where the episode's title originated, while Baden Kelly detailed how splitting up the two Green Lanterns ultimately brought them closer together. Hawes discussed joining Lanterns and walked through how the team approached figuring out how the Green Lanterns fly, as well as building the episode's car chase.

Much of the discussion centered on Earl, described as Hal Jordan's alien pet, with the creators tracing how the character grew from a writers' room idea into one of the episode's most memorable additions. The team also addressed the story's 48-hour clock, the evolving trust between John and Hal, and the balance between comic book mythology and the show's grounded tone, including conversations about bringing Sinestro into the series.

The episode also touched on Hal Jordan's Green Lantern suit and the performances of Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, whose dynamic as the show's central duo has been previously detailed in Kyle Chandler & Aaron Pierre Break Down Their LANTERNS Odd-Couple Chemistry. Lanterns airs new episodes on HBO Max, with the official podcast releasing new weekly episodes breaking down each installment.
