Jessica Simpson is in consideration to replace Simon Cowell on 'American Idol,' contactmusic.com reports.

According to Contact Music, gossip website TMZ has stated that there is "mutual interest" in Simpson's taking the spot, while a source told Life and Style, "They like her - she's a good fit - and she likes it. Now it's just a question of how to fit her in."

Others reportedly in consideration for the spot include Sir Elton John, Justin Timberlake, Lindsay Lohan, and Madonna.

'American Idol' founder Simon Fuller, who will choose the new judge, also wants producer Nigel Lythgoe to return to work on the show.  Some believe that Lythgoe's presence might lead to replacement of one or more of the show's current judges (Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson, and Ellen DeGeneres), Contact Music reports.

'American Idol's upcoming season will be the show's seventh.
