Dick Cavett on John Wayne on Noel Coward in the Times
In a commentary piece in the New York Times, former television talk show host Dick Cavett recalls his encounter with the great John Wayne, which prompted a rather unexpected conversation about Noel Coward.
At the time, Cavett was preparing for his primetime special 'Dick Cavett's Backlot U.S.A'. The special was going to feature notable guests such as Mae West, Mickey Rooney and Gene Kelly, yet the studios were looking for one more 'big name' to be added to the roster. When word spread that John Wayne, famously known as 'The Duke', was filming a Western in a studio nearby, Cavett rushed to meet the actor with the intention of featuring him on the primetime show.
Cavett recalls that during a scene set up on Wayne's film, the Duke was humming a Noel Coward tune; one that Cavett recognized and began to hum along to as well. Cavett vividly recalls the conversation that ensued. Below is an excerpt.
"Wayne: Wasn't he great?
Me: Who?
Wayne: Coward.
Me [startled, realizing now that the tune was Noel Coward's "Someday I'll Find You"]: Yes.
Wayne: I've always loved his stuff. Remember the scene in "Private Lives" when they realize they still love each other?
Me: Yes, and did you know there's a recording of Coward and Gertrude Lawrence doing that scene?
Wayne: Gee, I gotta get that. I guess I've read most of his plays.
Me [still not convinced there isn't a ventriloquist in the room]: I'll send you the record."
