BWW Blog: Leah Edwards of MASTER CLASS - Opera Tech Week by Guest Blogger: Leah Edwards
- April 08, 2013 One of my biggest challenges as a "crossover" artist has been making the adjustment to the theatre tech week schedule. An opera tech week has always seemed relaxed and methodical: sitzprobe, wandelprobe, dress run with piano, dress run with orchestra, day off, opening. We also never have to work for more than six hours a day. That's not to say that there aren't stressors, glitches or out-of-character attitudes, but, in general, things go pretty smoothly.

BWW Interviews: Marty Regan and Kenny Fries Talk HGO's THE MEMORY STONE by David Clarke
- April 04, 2013
Shortly after many children all over Houston had hunted lawns for eggs and other treats that the mythical Easter Bunny delivered this past Sunday, I had a delightful conversation with composer Marty Regan and librettist Kenny Fries for Houston Grand Opera (HGO)'s 50th World Premiere, THE MEMORY STONE. We discussed the new opera, looking into its creation, meaning, and cultural significance. As we talked about THE MEMORY STONE, it became abundantly clear that this particular opera is most deserving of being HGO's magical 50th World Premiere and that it will be one that audiences should not miss.
BWW Blog: Meet Leah Edwards of MASTER CLASS by Guest Blogger: Leah Edwards
- April 04, 2013 Testing, testing, 1..2..3. Hello, everyone! My name is Leah Edwards and I'm currently performing Sharon Graham in a production of Master Class down at Gulfshore Playhouse in Naples, Florida. I have been a lifelong artist-first a gymnast and dancer, then a classical pianist, then an opera singer and am now finding my way in the world of Broadway theatre. As I make these transitions, I don't mind telling you, it's always a little murky making my way out of one career and into the next. I often find myself with two resumes, two headshots, always trying to be what I think those knowledgeable in my new field "want" me to be and trying not to forget all the skills I'm confident I've learned from my previous one. Honestly, it's exhausting feeling so schizophrenic! But one thing I have always been certain of is that I love to learn. So I've altered my outlook and now use every experience-opera, play, recording-as a new, exciting expedition on which I can discover worlds of information I never knew I was missing.
Michael Mayer's RIGOLETTO Returns to the Met 4/13 by BWW News Desk
- April 04, 2013 Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer's critically acclaimed new production of Verdi'sRigoletto, which moves the opera's tragic events from a decadent 16th-century Italian court to the glitzy, depraved setting of the Las Vegas strip circa 1960, will return to the Met stage on April 13. Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo, who made a much-heralded company debut in 2010, returns to the Met to sing the role of the Duke, presented in this production as an amoral lounge singer. Georgian baritone George Gagnidze sings Rigoletto, the Duke's world-weary jester, and rising American soprano Lisette Oropesa sings her first company performances as the innocent Gilda, Rigoletto's daughter and the Duke's victim. Venezuelan bass Enrico Giuseppe Iori makes his Met debut as the assassin-for-hire Sparafucile, and Spanish mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera sings the role of his seductive sister, Maddalena. Italian conductor Marco Armiliato returns to lead five performances of Verdi's towering drama. Mayer's production also features the work of debuting artists Christine Jones (set design), Susan Hilferty (costume design), Kevin Adams (lighting design), andSteven Hoggett (choreography).
Regional Opera Company of the Week: PORTopera by Scott Frost
- April 04, 2013 PORTopera has quite an interesting inception story, dating back to the 1970s when Bruce Hangen, at that time Music Director for the Portland Symphony dreamed of forming an opera company in Maine. In 1985, Hangen accepted the Music Director position for the Omaha Symphony in Nebraska. This did not end his dreams of creating a summer season back in Maine and finally in 1994 the Portland State Theater became available. The time had come for Hangen and a group of friends and supporters created the company, then known as Portland Opera Repertory Theatre. The first production of the company was in July 1995 at the State Theater with Bizet's 'Carmen.' The overwhelming response led to another summer season in '96 with Puccini's 'Madama Butterfly.' In the second season the company also introduced PORTopera's Young Artists Program to help the careers of emerging young singers.
