BWW Blog: Leah Edwards - Opera vs. Theatre by Guest Blogger: Leah Edwards
- June 17, 2013 When I was first asked to be a guest blogger, I thought my focus would be to provide an operatic perspective on the world of theatre and vice versa. Since there are an infinite number of differences to discuss from the training to the music to the casting process to the productions to the artists themselves, I was pretty set on always being able to find a topic about which to write. But as I found my voice as a writer, I discovered instead that I was relating the similarities in the lifestyles, the subjectivity of art in general and how being an artist, regardless of specialty, is the most wonderful job in the world.
BWW Reviews: PRINCESS IDA Produced by Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Austin is Hysterical and Current by Jeff Davis
- June 16, 2013 There's certainly a reason why the works of Gilbert and Sullivan have remained a fixture in popular culture for nearly 150 years. Their operas are fun, frivolous, and tinted with social and political satire. Though Princess Ida, their eighth operatic collaboration, may not be as well-known as some of their other works such as The Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinifore, or The Mikado, it is just as silly, entertaining, and smart, as the current production by The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Austin wonderfully illustrates.
Independent Opera Company Presents Verdi's MACBETH at 3 LA Venues, Now thru 6/30 by BWW News Desk
- June 15, 2013 Independent Opera Company will present the final production of their first season. Macbeth is a remarkable representation of Shakespeare's epic drama. It tells of Macbeth and his wife as they go on a killing spree in a desperate attempt to maintain the throne of Scotland. They are propelled by the prophecies of witches and as these omens eventualize, the couple lose their grip on the power they seek. Verdi brings us in to a piece that is beautiful in its eeriness.

BWW Reviews: IL PRIGIONIERO Holds Audience Captive at New York Philharmonic by Richard Sasanow
- June 08, 2013 It's a rare occasion when a concerto--even one as brilliantly played as violinist Lisa Batiashvili's performance of Prokofiev's First--takes a back seat to the second half of the program. But the New York Philharmonic's concert performance of Luigi Dallapiccola's IL PRIGIONIERO, conducted authoritatively yet sensitively by Alan Gilbert, was such an event. By turns thrilling, soaring and sorrowful, the 50-minute opera, written in 1948, was as exciting a night at the opera as we had this season.
