BWW Previews: Keeping Abreast of ANNA NICOLE, an Opera with a Health Warning, from New York City Opera and BAM by Richard Sasanow
- September 16, 2013 Where does the Mark-Anthony Turnage-Richard Thomas opera, ANNA NICOLE, stand? “On the line of opera and musiktheatre,” said Elaine Padmore, former director of opera at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, speaking on a panel at the Guggenheim Museum's “Works & Process” event on September 8.
This “obscene and marvelous show,” which debuted in 2011 at London's famed opera house, tells the story of tabloid queen Anna Nicole Smith not only through music and words but nonstop movement as well, choreographed by Aletta Collins. It will have its American premiere on September 17 as a co-production of New York City Opera and BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), directed by Richard Jones.

- September 15, 2013 Washington National Opera (WNO) recently announced that Swedish soprano Iréne Theorin will sing the role of Isolde in its season-opening production of Richard Wagner's Tristan and Isolde. Ms. Theorin will sing the performances today, September 15, 18, 21, and 24. She replaces Deborah Voigt, who has withdrawn from the production. British soprano Alwyn Mellor will sing the final performance on September 27.

This epic romantic drama stars Deborah Voigt as Isolde and Ian Storey and Clifton Forbis as Tristan, and will be seen in a production new to Washington directed by Neil Armfield in his WNO debut. WNO Music Director Philippe Auguin leads the WNO Orchestra in interpreting some of Wagner's most passionate and powerful music.

- September 11, 2013 Gerard Mortier and the New York City Opera have commissioned Charles Wuorinen, an American composer, to turn Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain into a work for the operatic stage. Proulx wrote the libretto, and Wuorinen completed the opera in 2012. The premiere was postponed after New York City Opera's General Director, Gerard Mortier, resigned. The project was then again taken up by Mortier at the Teatro Real in Madrid and is set to premiere January 28, 2014.
