As BroadwayWorld previously reported, in the midst of budget troubles, the famed New York City Opera may cancel the remainder of its current season, as well as the its planned 2014-15 productions, if the company is unable to raise $20 million by the end of 2013, execs have confirmed to The New York Times. The company recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to tap into the generosity of its previous and potential future patrons. Since it went live, $56,734 of the $20 million goal has been pledged. Washington National Opera Presents Verdi's THE FORCE OF DESTINY, 10/12

Washington National Opera (WNO) continues its 2013-2014 season with a new production honoring the 200th birthday of Giuseppe Verdi, one of opera's most legendary composers: The Force of Destiny, October 12-26 in the Kennedy Center Opera House. Verdi's epic romantic and political drama, which hasn't been seen in Washington in nearly 25 years, will be presented in a daring and visually striking new production directed by WNO Artistic Director Francesca Zambello. Conductor Xian Zhang, in her WNO debut, leads the WNO Orchestra in interpreting some of Verdi's most beautiful melodies.

Soprano Tracy Cox and pianist Maureen Zoltek, winners of the 2012 Music Academy of the West Marilyn Horne Song Competition, will perform a program of works by Verdi, Strauss, Mark Carlson, Poulenc, and Gabriel Kahane at Opera America's new National Opera Center in New York City on Wednesday, September 25. The recital, which begins at 8 pm, will inaugurate Opera America's Emerging Artist Recital Series, a showcase for finalists and prizewinners from the nation's most prestigious young artist programs and competitions. Tickets cost $20. The National Opera Center is located at 330 Seventh Avenue in New York City.
Deborah Voigt Withdraws from TRISTAN AND ISOLDE at the Washington National Opera

The Washington National Opera has announced that Deborah Voigt has withdrawn from their production of Tristan und Isolde, which opens September 15. She is sorry to have disappointed her fans, and has issued this statement: “Returning to a role that I love but haven't sung in a number of seasons, and encountering its unique challenges, has caused me to reconsider keeping it in my repertoire. I'm very disappointed that I feel compelled to withdraw from this production, but am very happy to continue my association with WNO both this season and into the future.” Voigt will still be serving this season as the first-ever artist-in-residence with WNO's Domingo-Cafritz young artist program.

Anna Nicole, the Mark-Anthony Turnage opera surrounding the life events of model and socialite Anna Nicole Smith, comes to New York for its US premiere. Launching the 2013 Next Wave Festival, this co-production between BAM and New York City Opera features Sarah Joy Miller as Anna Nicole, the attention-seeking socialite who married oil mogul J. Howard Marshall II (a man more than 60 years her senior), squirmed her way into celebrity circles, and died as the result of an overdose on prescription drugs. Anna Nicole brings the audience through the annals of the life of a woman many saw as selfish and carefree. However, Anna Nicole is approached from different angles: the incredible tale of a young bombshell who won it all and lived a life of luxury, and the tragedy that took her away when life got too big for her.
