- November 05, 2013 Toronto, 5 November 2013…On Sunday, November 24, 2013, VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert presents the Canadian Premiere of Benjamin Britten's GLORIANA. The work premiered in London at Covent Garden in 1953 and was written in celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, a monarch now in the 50th year of her reign. “We are very excited about this performance” said General Director Guillermo Silva-Marin. “It is rare that we have the opportunity to present the Canadian premiere of a major work by a legendary composer from our own era to our public. I'm sure Toronto's opera lovers will be curious and thrilled by this magnificent work.”

- November 01, 2013 To commemorate the centennial of the opera's 1913 U.S. premiere at the Met, Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier returns for a series of performances conducted by Edward Gardner and featuring a cast of international singers making company debuts and role debuts. Viennese soprano Martina Serafin sings her first Met performances of one of her signature roles, the Marschallin. Alice Coote, who currently stars as Detective Anne Strawson in the North American premiere of Nico Muhly's Two Boys, sings the trouser role of the Marschallin's young lover, Octavian, while Mojca Erdmann makes her company role debut as Sophie, the innocent young woman who comes between the two. Peter Rose reprises his acclaimed interpretation of the Marschallin's oafish cousin, Baron Ochs; Hans-Joachim Ketelsen sings Sophie's protective father, Faninal; and Eric Cutler returns to the role of the Italian Singer. On December 3, German mezzo-soprano Daniela Sindram will make her Met debut as Octavian, a role she will also sing on December 7 and 10. On December 13, French mezzo-soprano Géraldine Chauvet will sing her first company performance of Octavian. At the December 3 performance, two graduates of the Met's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program will sing principal roles: Erin Morley as Sophie and Mario Chang as the Italian Singer.

- November 01, 2013 (Los Angeles) October 31, 2013 — Ethereal swaths of smoke combine to form familiar yet odd images: flowers that grow in slow motion as if by magic, elephants floating in cocktail glasses, flying flutes, dancing bells, an enigmatic black cat—anything is possible in LA Opera's new staging of Mozart's The Magic Flute. Created by the British theater group 1927 in collaboration with Barrie Kosky, artistic director of the Komische Oper in Berlin, the staging had its production premiere in that city last year, playing to sold-out houses and rave reviews. - November 01, 2013 In celebration of National Opera Week, The Atlanta Opera hosts its fourth annual 24-Hour Opera Project, a whirlwind creative science project where Verdi meets reality TV! Composers and lyricists, randomly paired together, are tasked with writing an opera in 12 hours. In the subsequent 12 hours, stage directors, singers and accompanists stage and rehearse the new piece. The Project culminates in a free showcase where judges and audience alike get to name the top piece.

- October 31, 2013 On Sunday, November 17 at 2 p.m., Nick Dowen will present an hour-long program on the life of opera great Ezio Pinza. Dowen, who has been collecting records since he was 13 years old, will share some of his thousands of recordings in a powerpoint presentation about the life of one of the most prolific singers in the history of music. A bass with a rich, smooth and sonorous voice, Pinza spent 22 seasons at New York's Metropolitan Opera, appearing in more than 750 performances of 50 operas. A popular recording star, Pinza went on to appear on Broadway, in Hollywood movies, and on television in his own series and daytime variety shows that were popular in the 1950s.
