Opera Atelier's founding co-artistic directors Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg today announced the company's 2014-2015 season, featuring the Canadian premiere of a fully staged period production of Handel's Alcina. Handel's magic opera will kick off the season (Oct. 23 – Nov. 1, 2014), followed by Opera Atelier's first exploration of the Berlioz version of Gluck'sOrpheus and Eurydice (April 9-18, 2015).

The New York Times reports that the Metropolitan Opera's general manger Peter Gelb will now take over labor negotiations with the organization's 16 unions. Four years ago, Gelb had assigned the task to Joseph Volpe in an unanticipated move. Contracts are up at the end of July, and now Gelb will lead the process of reaching new agreements.

This production follows a sold-out concert at Joe's Pub and a standing-room-only development reading in the spring of 2013. THE DISAPPEARING MAN takes place backstage at a small-time travelling circus in 1936. When the headliner is offered another job, the motley troupe must decide whether to adapt to the change or fight to keep the family together. One of the most popular American operas, Susannah is the tale of an innocent Tennessee mountain girl who is accused of sinful behavior by the church-going elders of the town. Written in the 1950s the opera is surprisingly modern in its treatment of women's empowerment. Carlisle Floyd wrote this opera while a professor at Florida State University and our cast will feature a member of the original cast! Mr. Floyd will be in residence the week prior to the performances and events featuring him will be announced at a later date.

The Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio, Canada's premier training program for young opera professionals, welcomes four talented new Canadian artists for the 2014/2015 season. Soprano Karine Boucher, tenor Jean-Philippe Fortier-Lazure and bass-baritone Iain MacNeil were among the nine finalists featured in the third annual Ensemble Studio Competition in November 2013. Boucher, Fortier-Lazure andMacNeil were top prize winners at the competitive vocal showcase which was the feature event of the COC's inaugural Ensemble Studio Competition Gala, Centre Stage, an evening dedicated to the discovery and celebration of the next generation of opera stars. In addition to the three opera singers, the 14/15 Ensemble Studio welcomes pianist Jennifer Szeto.
