Devan, General Director and President of Opera Philadelphia, today announced the commissioning of a new opera based on the life of legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker (1920-1955), one of the most influential soloists in the history of jazz and a central figure in the development of bebop. American tenor Lawrence Brownlee will star as Parker in a work written for him by composer Daniel Schnyder, with a libretto by poet and playwright Bridgette A. Wimberly. Soprano Angela Brownwill costar as Charlie's mother, Addie Parker. The opera is being developed in partnership with Gotham Chamber Opera.

Paul Nadler to Conduct Metropolitan Opera's DIE FLEDERMAUS, 2/3 & 5 by BWW News Desk
- January 30, 2014 Nadler, a member of the Met's music staff, has conducted 49 performances with the company since his debut in 1989. Later this season, he will conduct the February 15 performance of Dvo?ák's Rusalka. He has led Met performances of Verdi's Rigoletto, Un Ballo in Maschera, Aida, Don Carlo, and La Traviata; Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia; Wagner's Tannhäuser; Giordano's Andrea Chénier; Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps, Le Rossignol, and Oedipus Rex; Bizet's Carmen; Beethoven's Fidelio; Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin; Gounod's Roméo et Juliette; and Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.

'No Exit is both rich and empty at the same time - and that gave me the chance to make some tight and grizzly musical statements along with sections of dark, acid humor, and others of loss and sadness; a very varied journey in a short span of time,' remarked Vores about his adaptation of Existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre's celebrated play of the same name. No Exit is about three damned souls that are condemned to spend all of eternity together in a room with no exits, which they eventually discover is hell. - January 28, 2014 Gerard Mortier and the New York City Opera have commissioned Charles Wuorinen, an American composer, to turn Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain into a work for the operatic stage. Proulx wrote the libretto, and Wuorinen completed the opera in 2012. The premiere was postponed after New York City Opera's General Director, Gerard Mortier, resigned. The project was then again taken up by Mortier at the Teatro Real in Madrid and is set to premiere today, January 28, 2014.
