North Carolina Opera to Announce the 2014-15 Season at a Kickoff Event at CAM Raleigh, 6/30 by BWW News Desk
- June 23, 2014 On June 30, North Carolina Opera will announce the company's 2014-15 season at a kickoff event at CAM Raleigh, 409 W. Martin St. in Raleigh. The admission-free event, which runs 6 to 8 p.m., features musical highlights from the upcoming season, snacks, and beverages, including beer and wine. - June 23, 2014 Celebrating its Twenty-Ninth Year, Summer Opera Lyric Theatre announces a season featuring fully-staged productions of Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE, Puccini's MADAME BUTTERFLY and Samuel Barber's great 20th century masterpiece, VANESSA. Since 1986, Founder and General Director Guillermo Silva Marin has led aspiring young artists through an intensive 8 week course of study concentrating on character development in opera through text and music. These weeks culminate in a series of performances showcasing the young artists at the Robert Gill Theatre, University of Toronto. A haven for opera lovers in late summer, SOLT is the only operatic training course of its kind in the Greater Toronto Area, and alumni include Etienne Dupuis, Frederique Vezina, David Pomeroy, Keith Klassen, Marc Boucher, Krisztina Szabo, Joseph Kaiser, Norah Sourouzian and Joshua Hopkins.

Performances include the always popular Let's Make a Scene production on July 13 at 3:00 p.m., and the festival's grand finale performances of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I on July 25, 26 & 27. Two events benefiting Opera Theatre of the Rockies - Songs for a Summer Evening and “Opera Goofo – an Evening of Fun and Laughter” – round out the summer's performances.

- June 22, 2014 The National Coalition Against Censorship has added a new co-signer to its statement (read online) opposing the Metropolitan Opera's cancellation of live, high-definition screenings of John Adams' opera, The Death of Klinghoffer, to 65 countries. The International Committee for Artists' Freedom has joined as a co-signer, adding to the National Opera Association, Article 19, The Dramatists Legal Defense Fund, Free Expression Policy Project, freeDimensional, Freemuse, and PEN American Center. The statement urges the Metropolitan and its director, Peter Gelb, to reconsider and proceed with the scheduled simulcast. The list of organizations joining the statement is expected to continue growing.

- June 17, 2014 This summer, Nicholas Phan returns to his roots, joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood to sing the title role in Bernstein's Candide, the work that first inspired him to pursue a career in opera (Aug 16). In his third consecutive residency at the Oregon Bach Festival (June 26–July 10), the tenor takes part in performances of Vespers by Monteverdi and Rachmaninoff; Mozart's Requiem, led by Festival Director Emeritus Helmuth Rilling; an evening of Strauss Lieder; and after proving himself “the standout among the vocal soloists” (New York Times) in Bach's St. Matthew Passion at Carnegie Hall last month, a reconstruction of the Baroque master's St. Mark Passion. Phan also makes his Seattle Chamber Music Festival debut with Vaughan Williams and Brahms (July 18 & 21), and returns to New York's Bard Music Festival, now celebrating its 25th anniversary season, to sing Schubert in recital and with members of the American Symphony Orchestra (Aug 8 & 10).

- June 17, 2014 After an outpouring of concern that its plans to transmit John Adams's opera The Death of Klinghoffer might be used to fan global anti-Semitism, the Metropolitan Opera announced the decision today to cancel its Live in HD transmission, scheduled for November 15, 2014. The opera, which premiered in 1991, is about the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruise ship and the murder of one of its Jewish passengers, Leon Klinghoffer, at the hands of Palestinian terrorists.

- June 16, 2014 OPERA America, the national nonprofit service organization for opera, is pleased to announce details of Opera Conference 2014: Audiences Reimagined, to be held in San Francisco, CA from June 20–23. Hosted by San Francisco Opera, in association with Opera Volunteers International, this largest annual gathering of opera professionals in North America will convene at venues in Union Square and the Civic Center. It marks the first time the Conference will be held in San Francisco in 25 years.
