Florida Grand Opera (FGO) announces today that the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, in an effort to keep opera in Ft. Lauderdale, has agreed to allow FGO to extend the deadline of when it must confirm the use of 2015-16 dates. FGO must now inform the center that the opera will be using the reserved dates for FGO's 2015-16 productions, Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia and Bellini's Norma, by February 14, 2015.

FGO General Director and CEO Susan T. Danis commented, "Thanks to the wonderful partnership we enjoy with the Broward Center and the commitment of its CEO, Kelley Shanley, we have two more weeks to work toward the accomplishment of our goal of $400,000."

On January 7, 2015, the Opera announced that support over the past decade in Broward County has significantly declined, resulting in a loss of $125,000 on its 2013-14 BCPA productions and another loss that has been projected for the current season. Due to the company's financial instability, a fundraising goal of $600,000 was established. If this goal was not reached by January 31, which marked the date that the Opera was required to inform the BCPA whether or not it was going to the use the performance dates reserved for the company, FGO would be unable to bring any of its 2015-16 performances to the BCPA.

On January 19, 2015, it was announced that an anonymous donor would match all contributions, dollar for dollar, in hopes of encouraging Broward donors and patrons to contribute to FGO's fundraising efforts. As of the writing of this release, approximately $300,000 of the opera's $400,000 goal has been met.

"We are almost there," Danis said, "and so happy we have another 2 weeks to accomplish our goal."

A formal announcement regarding FGO's future in Broward County will be released on Monday, February 16, 2015.

Broward County donors and patrons now have until Saturday, February 14 to contribute to this fundraising effort. Donations can be made online at www.tickets.FGO.org/contribution.
