Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore have been friends for 30 years, but only recently realized they had never played music with each other before. In 2017, Grammy winner Alvin and Grammy nominee Gilmore decided to hit the highway to swap songs, tell stories, and share their life experiences in intimate, acoustic environments. Though Texas born Gilmore was twice named Country Artist of the Year by Rolling Stone and California native Alvin first came to fame in the hard rocking rhythm and blues band The Blasters, they discovered that their musical roots in old blues and folk music are the same. In their spontaneous shows, audiences will not only hear classic original compositions from the two, but they can also choose songs that include a wide spectrum of songwriters and styles - from old jug band numbers to Merle Haggard and Sam Cooke to the Young Bloods 60's anthem, "Get Together." Each of these rare and special performances are different from the last.

Born in Chicago, Alicia Michelle "Miki" Howard is the daughter of two well-known gospel singers. When Howard was in her early teens, her mother moved the family to Los Angeles. Already aiming at a career in music, the 15-year-old Howard received her first break when she participated in a teen beauty contest. Augie Johnson, leader of the group Side Effect, happened to be in the audience; impressed with Howard's singing talent, Howard joined the Side Effect lineup in 1978 when another singer departed. Howard sang with Side Effect until 1982. Howard signed a contract with Atlantic Records in the mid-1980s and recorded her first solo album, Come Share My Love, in 1986. The title track from the album was its first single, hitting the top ten of the R&B charts and reaching number five in late 1986. Howard now has 10 studio albums and has had many top ten hits on the R&B Charts during her 35+ year career as well as a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album for her album Three Wishes. Her most recent album, I Choose to be Happy, includes both new material and some of her top hits re-recorded.

Lyricist, lead vocalist, and co-founder of O.A.R. Marc Roberge plays a rare solo performance at City Winery Chicago. His jam band O.A.R. is renowned for their intense, vibrant live shows with hits including "Hey Girl," "This Town," "Shattered," and their most recent, "Peace" about starting fresh. The Rockville, MD native points to Pearl Jam as his biggest musical influence.

The rise of Austin, TX singer/songwriter Joe Pug has been as improbable as it has been impressive. After dropping out of college and taking on work as a carpenter in Chicago, Pug got his musical start by providing CDs for his fans to pass along to their friends. This led to a string of sold out shows and a record deal with Nashville indie Lightning Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver). Pug toured in support of his albums Messenger (2010) and The Great Despiser (2012) with a band that looked as much like a jazz trio as an Americana band. They've been on the road for over four hundred shows, including stops at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and The Newport Folk Festival. His latest release is Windfall (2015).

Over three decades, the Seattle-rooted The Posies, led by musical polymaths Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, have created a diverse modern pop catalogue. Since the duo's beginning, the band sired a succession of classic LPs - including the now seminal Dear 23 and Frosting on the Beater- that served as joyous rejoinders to a generation mired in grunge. And yet, for much of their history, the band has been playing a game of genre tag semantics, dodging facile and limiting descriptions like "power pop" and "retro pop" - terms which initially greeted their 1988 debut, Failure. A limited number of Meet & Greet tickets are available for $60, not including concert.

One of the most critically acclaimed bands of the last three decades, 10,000 Maniacs return for their annual Valentine's Weekend run. 10,000 Maniacs was founded by Robert Buck, Dennis Drew, Steven Gustafson, John Lombardo, and Natalie Merchant in the fall of 1981. Jerry Augustyniak joined in 1983. Together, with artists like R.E.M., they defined college rock and created the first wave of alternative rock bands and what became known as the alternative rock format on FM radio. Writing and performing powerful, danceable and socially conscious original material in and around their hometown of Jamestown, NY, the group toured extensively and produced two independently released records, Human Conflict Number Five ('82) and Secrets of the I Ching ('83) on their own Christian Burial Music label.
City Winery also announces Brian Dunne opens for The Secret Sisters on Dec. 4.
All City Winery events are open to all ages and start at 8 p.m., unless noted.
Tickets go on sale to the general public on Thursday, September 14 at noon. Opened in 2012, City Winery Chicago is a fully operational winery, restaurant with outdoor patio, concert hall and private event space located in the heart of the West Loop at 1200 W. Randolph, in the historic urban Fulton Market district. Once a refrigerated food distribution warehouse, the 1911 building has been transformed into a contemporary 33,000 square foot haven for those passionate about wine, music and culinary arts. The décor evokes the romance of being in wine country, from the exposed stainless steel fermenting tanks and French oak barrels, to the aroma of fermenting grapes.
