Inaugural Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition to be Held in 2017

Today it was announced that celebrated violinist Elmar Oliveira, in collaboration with the Lynn Conservatory of Music, launches the Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition (EOIVC). The EOIVC aims to give a young and talented violinist, ages 16-32, the tools necessary for building a strong foundation for success in the arts industry by providing financial support, as well as career development in the areas of artistic management, public relations, and performance opportunities. The competition will be held at Lynn University from January 22-February 5, 2017. Competitors should send online submissions and registration fee to www.elmaroliveiraivc.org by September 30, 2016.

American String Quartet to Perform in Cooperstown, 4/24

The music of Beethoven and Ravel will fill the Otesaga Hotel ballroom on Sunday, April 24 at 4 pm.  The American String Quartet, internationally recognized as one of the world's finest, will perform these masterworks, and, with Linda Chesis, a piece for  flute and string quartet by French composer Albert Roussel. This is the first concert of the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival's 18th season.  Ms. Chesis, the Festival's artistic director and founder, has performed with the American String Quartet numerous times, including two times in Cooperstown. The Quartet is comprised of Peter Winograd and Laurie Carney, violins; Daniel Avshalomov, viola; Wolfram Koessel, cello.

Chambers The Tall-Eared Fox and the Wild-Eyed Man Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Holst The Planets We close our season with a timeless message from Ann Arbor composer Evan Chambers: “we should live life like we make music, with love, a deep sense of the simple and overwhelming beauty around us, and with wild abandon.” Chambers' effervescent music will delight and resound with you. The concert continues with one of Mendelssohn's most elegant and lyrical concertos played by Gold Medalist of the 2014 Ninth Quadrennial International Violin Competition of the Indianapolis, Jinjoo Cho. The concert concludes with Holst's Planets, performed in its entirety complete with women's chorus. As a special feature, out-of-this-world NASA video footage of the planets will be projected on the screen over the orchestra.
The New York Choral Society to Present Handel's ISRAEL IN EGYPT

The New York Choral Society will present Handel's biblical oratorio Israel in Egypt under the baton of Music Director David Hayes, on Tuesday evening, May 10th, 2016, 8pm at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. Composed entirely from selected passages from the Bible's Old Testament, Israel in Egypt relates the harshness of the Israelites' captivity in Egypt and their subsequent triumphant escape from the Pharaoh's oppressive regime. Israel in Egypt is atypical in Handel's choral output, as it contains little solo material and is dominated by large-scale virtuosic choruses that exhibit Handel's mastery as a musical storyteller.

BMOP Presents David Del Tredici's CHILD ALICE Tonight

The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), the 2016 Musical America Ensemble of the Year, ends its 20th anniversary season with the Boston premiere of David Del Tredici's complete Child Alice (1981) featuring the acclaimed soprano Courtenay Budd. Based on poems prefacing Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this 135-minute evening-length work changed the course of 20th century music.

Oakland, March 23, 2016 – The Oakland Symphony, Music Director and Conductor Michael Morgan, the Oakland Symphony Chorus and guest artists Tracy Silverman, electric violin, and soprano Nicole Joseph will conclude the Symphony's 2015-2016 season with a concert of music by John Adams, Stravinsky, Barber and RavelFriday, May 20, at 8 pm at the Paramount Theatre. Mr. Silverman will perform John Adams' The Dharma at Big Sur for orchestra and electric violin and Ms. Joseph, who was the winner of the 2015 Toland Vocal Arts Competition, will sing Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Completing the evening will be Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms with the Oakland Symphony Chorus, Lynne Morrow, Director; and Ravel's La Valse.
