Kirshbaum Associates Announce 2017-2018 Season Concert Highlights by BWW News Desk
- October 05, 2017 92Y's 17-18 season opens on October 5 with internationally renowned cellist Mischa Maisky joining the “amazing precision” (Huffington Post) of the notably conductorless Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, which returns to 92Y for the first time in 15 years, to celebrate the cellist's 70th birthday season. Together, they open 92Y's illustrious concert season with Schubert's beloved “Arpeggione” Sonata, arranged for cello and string orchestra by Dobrinka Tabakova, as well as Arensky's Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky, and Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings. Acclaimed for the sheer intensity and vigor of his performances, Maisky has the distinct honor of being the only cellist in the world to have studied under both Gregor Piatigorsky and Mlatislav Rostrapovich. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is renowned as one of the foremost chamber orchestras in the world, with more than 70 albums in its sprawling discography since its founding in 1972.

The recording features a world premiere arrangement of Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata in A Minor, D. 821 for four cellos by Tom Zebovitz; Popper's Requiem, Op.66; and Handel's Sonata for Two Cellos in G Minor, Op.2 No.8. - September 21, 2017 The National Philharmonic's 2017-2018 season at The Music Center at Strathmore commences with star-studded performances by some of today's most famous classical musicians. The concert on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m., will feature the famous former child prodigy Sarah Chang (violin) and Grammy winning Zuill Bailey (cello), conducted by Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski. On Sunday, Oct. 15, at 3 p.m., Chang will play alongside pianist Santiago Rodriguez, who will be making his return-debut to the Washington area. Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett is conducting the Star-Spangled Banner on Saturday. An instrument petting zoo will take place in the lobby on Sunday from 2-2:30 p.m., allowing children a chance to experiment with instruments from different families (string, wood, brass, and percussion). In both concerts, musicians will play Beethoven's Egmont Overtureand Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor.

Metropolis Ensemble Announces 2017-18 Season by BWW News Desk
- September 20, 2017 Grammy-nominated Metropolis Ensemble looks forward to a prototypical season in 2017-18. This fall, Metropolis presents a five-concert piano mini-series at its loft (a former art gallery) in lower Manhattan in collaboration with long-time Metropolis associate, pianist David Kaplan. In December, the ensemble accompanies the film Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia as part of BAM's Next Wave Festival. And early in 2018, Metropolis performs major new works by Timo Andres and Caroline Shaw (at the Met Museum) and William Brittelle (at Symphony Space). This formula of collaborative involvement from the earliest stages, when just the bare root of the ideas are being planted, to final culmination of the project (in collaboration with some of country's most prestigious presenters) has become a trademark of the organization.
