What if the writing of Romeo and Juliet came from Shakespeare’s own unexpected love story? Shakespeare in Love is the imagined inspiration behind one of the world’s most celebrated love stories. Filled with romance, comedy, backstage chaos, and the thrill of making theatre, it opens at Aurora Players on May 29.
Based on the Academy Award-winning film and adapted for the stage, Shakespeare in Love (screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard) follows a young William Shakespeare as he struggles with writer’s block while attempting to write his next play. His creative spark is reignited when he meets Viola de Lesseps, a bold and intelligent young noblewoman who secretly longs to perform onstage despite laws forbidding women from acting in Elizabethan England. What follows is a whirlwind of mistaken identities, forbidden romance, backstage mishaps, and theatrical ambition as life and art begin to mirror one another.
Total running time is approximately 2.5 hours, including one 15-minute intermission.
