Tobacco Road is set during one of the most devastating periods in American history. As the Great Depression tightened its grip, rural Southern farming communities were already collapsing under environmental and economic catastrophe. The Dust Bowl years stripped the land of fertility, cotton prices plummeted, and decades of unsustainable farming practices left once‑productive soil barren. Industrialization accelerated, pulling labor away from farms and into factories, mills, and railroads.
The Jeeter family’s decaying homestead reflects this national shift: a once‑viable agrarian world giving way to a modern industrial society. Their struggle is not merely personal—it is emblematic of a cultural and economic transformation reshaping the entire country.
Tobacco Road follows the Jeeter family as they attempt to survive on land they no longer own and can no longer cultivate. Lester Jeeter, a third‑generation cotton farmer, clings to the belief that the land will one day sustain him again. His wife Ada sees the truth: the farm is dead, the world has changed, and their family must adapt or perish.
Across the play, the Jeeters encounter figures who represent different responses to change—opportunism, compassion, pragmatism, manipulation, and freedom. The story unfolds as a darkly comic, often unsettling portrait of poverty, pride, and the human cost of refusing to let go of the past.
