Set in Lowell, this joyful journey follows Soma, a queer Cambodian American teenager, finding her voice and stepping into her legacy. When Soma posts a video performing her own poetry about the struggles she’s facing including her father’s deportation, it quickly goes viral. Now, Lowell High School’s spoken word contest approaches, and Soma must decide if she’s brave enough to step up to the mic. Told with humor, heart-forward characters, and culminating in the biggest Khmer cultural event of the season, Kween explores all the ways we author our path home.
Merrimack Repertory Theatre will present Kween, a vibrant and heart-forward new work set in Lowell that celebrates queer identity, Cambodian American heritage, and the courage to speak one’s truth.
Merrimack Repertory Theatre will unveil its exciting 2025-26 season, bringing a dynamic mix of drama, music, comedy and compelling cultural narratives to the stage. This season will include stories that resonate deeply across diverse experiences.

The Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) announces its inaugural Mayor Sokhary Chau Playwriting Fellowship to begin in 2024. This season-long fellowship will provide writers with the opportunity to create and workshop new work centering Southeast Asian narratives for new audiences.
The Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association will partner on the production, which will premiere in a later season. MRT presented a reading of excerpts from Kween, directed by Pironne Yousefzadeh, as part of its FIRST LOOK series last November.
