Saw the evening performance of Gypsy tonight, on a whim.
Before the show started, the man was doing the cell phone announcement, and at the end goes, "Patti LuPone has injured her foot." Then he paused. You can imagine the reaction- people started gasping, and were going, "Oh, no!" because I guess they thought she wasn't going to perform. After a long second or two, he finished with, "So she will be wearing isotoners for the entire performance."
I swear the man deliberately paused just to enjoy the panic he knew he was sure to cause.
The show was fantastic, by the way. LuPone still gives me chills (and I was not a fan of hers before this), and Benanti and Gaines have gotten better since the last time I saw them (first preview) if that's even possible.
I think they do the announcement now just so they can get the reaction from the audience. They did it on Sunday too, and the guy paused for a really long time.
Though, really, if Patti wasn't going to perform, we'd know about it before 30 seconds before curtain. I guess people aren't really thinking when they hear the announcement though. I know that when they had the first announcement about her being sick, my stomach dropped.
I saw the evening performance as well. When the announcement came on I was not worried because I knew that they have recently been making this announcement. After the show she still came out of the stage door. She has a broken toe. I give her a lot of credit b/c a broken toe is extremely painful to walk on let alone dane and perform on. After the show she looked extremely worn out and tired. And btw in tonight's performance Donald Trump and his wife were in the audience.
"The thing is, I probably NEVER would have noticed it, had they not announced it."
A costume designer that I worked with said that 90% of the audience never looks below the waist. She could be wearing fuzzy bunny slippers and most people wouldn't notice.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
She wore them on the Saturday 6/21 matinee, too, and the announcer made the announcement, and everyone (inclding my cousin, who is a HUGE Patti fan) just went insane... and then the announcer finished, when everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief. I remembered reading it somewhere here before, so it wasn't as much of a shock.
When I saw it Patti was awesome! She lost one of the isotoners during "You'll Never Get Away from Me" and laughed so hard trying to put it back on she and Boyd fell... (not sure if that was part of the show) but in all it was absolutely awesome! Updated On: 6/26/08 at 11:11 AM

Yes, the falling is part of the blocking for the song.

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

^ That's what I'm thinking too. Because... she wore the isotoners this past Thursday (6/19) and they did NOT make any announcement. Updated On: 6/26/08 at 02:03 PM
I saw the show for the first time last night too. It was Amazing!! I'm sure they make that pause in the announcement just to get a reaction...my first thought when they paused was they that were going to say just kidding or something...haha. But besides the different shoes you'd never no she was hurt. Oh and thats funny that Donald Trump and his wife were there. I was in like the fifth row but opposite side of where Patti enters...I didn't see him.
